Thanks for asking. Many of us have a lot of self -doubt after we've been on a first date.
Was my date interested in me the same way I am in them?
Did the date even go well at all?
Okay in some cases it might have been a complete flop and there's simply nothing to be told.
done about it. But a lot of the time we actually kind of sabotage our own chances of finding love by viewing the situation in an overly negative light.
This very human reaction is known as the liking gap.
And it's become a topic of discussion on social media in recent times, in particular on TikTok.
How does that work then?
Well, the liking gap is the idea that we tend to underestimate ourselves and assume that others like us less than they actually do it's pretty typical when you start dating someone we want to make a good impression so we tend to slip into performance mode but rarely do we ask the other person directly if they enjoyed our company instead we rely on our own internal judgement and we're usually far too critical you see there's a gap between what you think the other person thinks of you and what they actually think.
With time that gap may narrow, but in the moment it can completely derail a date.
If you feel the interest isn't mutual, you might shut down or become distant out of a fear of rejection.
You could easily end up with two people who genuinely like each other, but neither of them knows it and they end up never seeing each other again as a result.
What a shame! Does the liking gap only appear in romantic relationships then?
Not at all, it happens in any kind of new social interaction really, you generally don't experience it with a childhood friend or a close family member.
After all, those relationships come with years of familiarity, but in a new job, a budding friendship or a fresh flat share, it's a different story.
The liking gap concept was first introduced in 2018 in the journal Psychological Science.
It shared findings from a study which saw a large group of strangers asked to split up into small groups and chat.
Afterwards each person was asked how much they liked the others and how much they thought that they were liked in return.
The findings revealed that most people underestimated how much others had enjoyed their company.
In short, we're our own worst critics.
We overthink everything.
Was I interesting enough?
Friendly enough? Did I come across as likeable?
And that's often the case even when the other person is giving us plenty of positive signals.
Does it affect everyone to the same extent?
It's usually a question of self -confidence.
People who are introverted or shy don't always feel at ease in new social settings and thus they tend to experience a wider liking gap.
Age also comes into the equation.
Interestingly, children up to around the age of 5 don't experience the liking gap at all.
Gus Cooney was the author of the original liking gap study from 2018 and talking to vice .com for a feature on the phenomenon in 2021 he said really young children aren't really thinking about whether another person likes them.
They don't care about the reputation they make.
But as that voice turns on that cares about reputation, the liking gap starts to appear.
