This is the Let's Master English podcast, and I'm your host, Coach Shane.
Hello, everybody.
Coach Shane here.
Welcome back to the Let's Master English podcast, number 144.
Publication date, September 29th.
This is for the week of September 29th through October 5th, 2025.
But it can be whenever you are listening.
Hi, great to have you.
We have a birthday announcement.
Actually, it's in one week from today.
But I worry that I'll forget.
On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month the lunar month by the moon, which is actually October 6th, is Captain Zhang's daughter's birthday.
Now, Captain Zhang, you didn't tell me your daughter's name and I do not know how old she is, but I know that everybody listening wants to wish her a happy birthday.
Happy birthday.
His daughter's birthday is right exactly on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Now, that is a fall festival that's celebrated in several Asian countries.
China and Korea, I know for sure, celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, so that's wonderful.
And Captain Zhang wishes everyone a wonderful time.
Thank you very much.
Also, Ethan Yu has joined us.
He's preparing for the IELTS exam and joining our LME family and Perf Fresh 28 is a new beginning for him.
Ethan, it's great to have you, and good luck on your forthcoming IELTS exam.
We can help you.
You joined Perf Fresh 28.
So we're going to help you with your speaking skills.
Please listen to the coaches and join as many AMA classes as you can.
Okay.
Good luck to you too, Ethan.
The community leaders this week, it's so exciting.
I'm going to go for the week.
Sitting at position number 10 is Taisei Koshida.
This guy's rocking and rolling despite a little bit of drinking.
Miko Jo is at number nine.
Alex Understated, who's never understated.
He is number eight.
Adam Zhang is rocking and rolling.
He's at number seven.
Position number seven, Fulia is position number six.
Another newcomer, Gav Karoy.
Oh, my goodness.
I hope my pronunciation was somewhat close.
She's doing great.
Position number five, Khalil Gacha is at number four.
Evelyn Vincent is at number three.
And Jenny Yu, she's also a newcomer.
She's at position number two.
She is rocking and rolling.
Uh, jenny and her son edward, are just uh, all over, so make sure you check that out.
And position number one is gian sung.
Congratulations again.
Gian and evelyn are very close to having a flame after their name.
Now, in our community, all of you can get a flame.
You need to do two, ten activities a day.
That can just be a comment or a post, or even a thumbs up.
That's enough.
10 activities a day, but you need to do it for 30 days in a row.
Okay?
So if you do it for 30 days in a row, you're going to get a flame behind your name, just like Serge, just like Khalil, just like Coach Mila, just like me.
But let me tell you the bad news.
Evelyn and Jian, remember this.
If you miss just one day, and this has happened to me, you lose your flame.
Yeah, it's got to be 30 days.
It has to be consecutive days of 10 or more activities.
And that just means you're a community leader.
And that's what we like.
That's what we love.
So congratulations to all of the leaders.
And again, Gian and Evelyn, I know for sure are right there.
They're like a couple days away from getting a flame behind their name.
Jenny is rock and rolling.
Khalil already has one.
It's just amazing to see the activity.
Okay, we have so many request songs in this podcast.
Almost everything is a request song, including our opening song, Peter Schilling with Major Tom.
News coming up after that.
Let's master it.
The UK announced plans for mandatory digital ID cards, called BritCards, for every working adult by 2029.
The goal?
Make it harder for illegal workers and to secure borders.
But a petition to scrap them is close to 2 million signatures, calling it a nightmare.
A 3000-year-old gold bracelet from a pharaoh vanished from Cairo's Egyptian Museum on September 9 2025.
A restoration specialist stole it, sold it for $3,700, and a jeweler melted it down for new jewelry.
The priceless artifact, worth far more, is gone forever.
Four suspects were arrested and the cash was seized.
And finally, Finland ranks as the happiest country for eight years straight.
Why?
Strong social support, free libraries like Helsinki's Udi with gaming and 3D printing, high taxes, funding benefits and nature access.
Saunas and cold dips boost mental health and Finns chase personal dreams over status.
There's actually another story that I kind of wanted to add.
But it's just such an American story, I decided not to.
You guys know AOL, American Online?
Do you know the movie You've Got Mail?
You've Got Mail.
Or was it some movie about that?
Let's see if I can play the sound here.
You know that sound?
Awesome.
That old dial-up modem.
Do you remember that?
A long time ago some of you are too young, but a long time ago, when you wanted to use the internet from home, you had to use a modem that was connected to your phone line.
September 30th, there's an internet service company in America called AOL American Online and they still offer dial-up modem service.
However, on September 30th it ends.
Oh so that sound, this sound right here, this sound will officially be history on september 30th.
Kind of sad yeah we're, we're really stepping into the future.
So there's your fourth story, but no, going back to the first story, uh i.
Digital id cards.
Digital ID cards.
I have one.
Yeah, I have one.
My wife and my two boys, we have one.
We go to Canada all the time and we don't need to bring our passports.
We have these digital ID cards.
It's very simple to use.
I also have one when I go to the airport.
I actually have two if I fly and people are scared about them.
Oh, I don't like them.
For me, not a big deal.
I don't mind having a digital ID card.
But a lot of people really hate the idea.
The UK announced plans for mandatory digital ID cards.
See, that's the problem.
Mandatory.
M-A-N-D-A-T-O-R-Y.
Mandatory means you don't have a choice.
People don't like to be told they don't have a choice.
Right?
Right?
Do you like that?
Do you like to be told, you don't have a choice?
I don't like it.
It was my choice to get one.
I got one a couple years ago, several years ago, three, four years ago.
It was my choice.
But if they told me I had to get one, I might be against it too.
So anyway, the UK announced plans for mandatory digital ID cards called BRIT cards, B-R-I-T, BRIT, British, for every working adult by 2029.
The goal, why are they doing this?
To make it harder for illegal workers.
Okay.
And to secure borders.
Well, it kind of works.
I mean, I use mine at the border, the U.S.-Canada border.
I use it all the time, a couple times a week.
I don't use it for work, although sometimes I have to take a picture of my ID.
Anyway, but a petition, P-E-T-I-T-I-O-N, P-E-T-I-P-E-T-I-O-N, petition.
A petition to scrap them, scrap, to scrap something, S-C-R-A-P, to throw away.
A petition, that is where people sign a piece of paper, like people sign paper to change a law.
A petition to scrap them, these digital ID cards, is close to 2 million signatures.
Almost 2 million people have signed this paper already to scrap, to get rid of these digital id cards.
People are calling the id cards a nightmare.
They don't like it a nightmare.
A lot of countries have digital id cards.
What about you?
Do you have one?
Do you mind?
Is the government watching you?
Is the government controlling you?
Not yet.
I hope could they in the future Hmm.
Kind of scary.
But it is the digital age.
Can we escape?
I don't know.
I'm not sure if we can escape.
A lot of British people don't like it.
I'm curious about you.
What do you think?
The next story.
Oh, this is a tragedy.
A 3,000-year-old gold bracelet.
A bracelet, that's like a gold, you know, a ring, R-I-N-G.
A ring goes on your finger.
A necklace goes around your neck.
A bracelet goes around your wrist, W-R-I-S-T.
Guys do have bracelets, but usually women wear bracelets.
A 3,000-year-old gold bracelet from a pharaoh.
Like in Egypt, a pharaoh?
The king.
In America, we say pharaoh.
We do not say pharaoh.
We say pharaoh.
P-H-A-R-A-O-H.
Pharaoh.
Vanished.
This bracelet vanished from Cairo's Egyptian Museum on September 9th, 2025.
Oh, my God.
A couple weeks ago, this bracelet, 3,000-year-old bracelet, gold, vanished.
It disappeared.
What happened?
A restoration specialist stole it.
A person who takes these old things and cleans them, makes them look pretty.
One of those people, a restoration specialist, stole the bracelet.
Now, Evelyn, one of our students, she's a DDM VIP, PERF VIP student.
Her husband is a restoration specialist.
So, Evelyn, has your husband ever stolen anything from a museum?
No.
I'm sure he hasn't.
This is crazy.
A restoration specialist stole it.
They stole the bracelet.
And here's the stupid part.
They sold it for $3,700.
They sold a 3,000-year-old gold bracelet from a pharaoh, an Egyptian pharaoh.
They sold it for $3,700.
Oh my God.
And here's the even stupider part.
A jeweler, a guy who makes jewelry, melted it down for new jewelry.
The guy who bought the 3,000-year-old gold bracelet melted it so he could make rings and earrings.
Oh my, these are idiots, right?
They're bad people, and they're really stupid.
Not just stupid, really stupid.
The bracelet is priceless.
It's worth thousands and thousands of dollars.
The priceless artifact, this bracelet worth far more, worth much more, is gone forever because of some idiots.
And in this case, suspects means idiots were arrested and the cash $3,700 was seized.
Oh my God.
What should happen to these people?
Obviously they should go to jail.
Jeez.
Lose their job.
Of course.
Just ridiculous.
People are so, I just, what goes on in your head?
You know?
I don't know.
You and I, we're not idiots.
So we don't understand.
But what a loss.
But now we got some happy news.
Literally happy news.
Finland up there in Scandinavia, northern part of Europe.
Finland ranks as the happiest country for eight years straight.
This is their eighth straight year of being the happiest country in the world.
And the question is why.
Strong social support.
Their social infrastructure is very good.
They help each other.
They're nice to each other.
There's no crime.
Everybody has health care.
Free libraries.
But everybody has free libraries.
However, Finland libraries are amazing.
You can rent instruments.
They have 3D printing.
They have studios where you can make music.
They have sports facilities in the libraries.
There's saunas in the libraries.
There's gaming.
You can go there and play games in the libraries.
That sounds pretty cool.
Strong social support.
Free libraries like Helsinki's Udi library with gaming and 3D printing.
High taxes funding benefits.
So Finland does have a lot of high taxes, but those taxes go right back to the people and the people see the benefits immediately.
In America, we got high taxes.
Like in Vermont, where I live, very high taxes.
I don't see anything.
I don't know where the money goes.
And of course, Finland, 75% of Finland is forest.
Nature access.
People have access to nature.
Forests everywhere.
Clean water.
Beautiful.
In America, we say sauna, sauna, S-A-U-N-A, sauna.
But in Finland, they say sauna, sauna.
Saunas and cold dips.
A really hot steam sauna and then jump into the cold water.
Saunas and cold dips boost, increase mental health.
They improve mental health.
And Finns, Finnish people... chase personal dreams over status.
They don't care about your car.
They don't care about your clothes.
They don't care about your job.
They chase personal dreams.
That's kind of cool.
At least in America we're always worried about how we look, what kind of car we drive.
These things status, our job title.
But I guess not in Finland.
I was talking with a bunch of students the other day and we kind of came to the conclusion to be really happy, want less.
If you want to be happy, want less.
Want less things.
Want less physical things.
Want less big dreams.
Want less from your husband and your wife and your children.
Want less.
Be happy with what you have.
Don't give up.
Be happy with what you have.
Maybe that's what the Finns have.
It's kind of nice.
All right, three stories.
After that, we got some songs.
Golden, this is a request song, perfect for Egypt by Hunters.
Ain't got no, I got life, another request song.
It's happiness.
You got life, right?
You might not have a lot of money, but you got your life.
That's cool.
Let's listen to the news stories one more time.
The UK announced plans for mandatory digital ID cards, called BritCards, for every working adult by 2029.
The goal?
Make it harder for illegal workers and to secure borders.
But a petition to scrap them is close to 2 million signatures calling it a nightmare.

A restoration specialist stole it, sold it for $3,700, and a jeweler melted it down for new jewelry.
The priceless artifact worth far more than is gone forever.
Four suspects were arrested and the cash was seized.
And finally, Finland ranks as the happiest country for eight years straight.
Why?
Strong social support.
Free libraries like Helsinki's Udi library with gaming and 3D printing.
High taxes funding benefits and nature access.
Saunas and cold dips boost mental health.
And Finns chase personal dreams over status. and entertainment come together.
Let's master English.
Do it how you doing everybody?
This is country shane, and i'm bringing you the facts.
Hey everybody, country shane, here.
Oh, finland's the happiest country.
I'm not surprised, like coach shane was saying, their libraries are amazing and they're free.
Video games saunas, 3d printers, it's a community playground.
Speaking of saunas, Finland has 3 million saunas and only 55 million people.
And daily hot cold routines cut stress like magic.
Send me to Finland!
That does sound really nice, Country Shame.
Indeed it does.
You know, Finland not only has this great sauna culture, but it's very safe.
They say your wallet is safe even if you leave it on a park bench.
You could put your wallet on a park bench in the middle of a park and your wallet would be safe.
Wow.
That's pretty cool.
In America, nothing's safe.
I mean, i live in the country so it's very safe here, but if i went into town and i put my wallet on a bench, oh it'd be gone.
Yeah, we don't have that.
It's too bad.
I think we used to.
I'm not sure what about where you live is.
Are your parks safe?
Can children go to the parks by themself?
In Finland, they do.
Five-year-old children leave the house and go to the park and play and come home.
By themselves, they do.
When I was a kid, we did that.
But now in 2025, no, we don't do that.
What about where you live?
Is it safe?
Is it cool?
What a great place.
That sounds really nice, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Is this the world we created?
Is this the world we created?
Oh, sorry.
That's a request song by Queen.
Tips for mastering English.
Phrasal verb of the week.
We're talking about libraries, right?
So I thought checkout would be great.
Now, what do you do at a library?
You check out books.
You check out movies.
Okay, you can check out things.
You guys know that, right?
But I'm going to give you three other definitions of to check out.
Number one, to examine or to look at, to observe something.
Hey, check out this new app for learning English.
Hey, let's check out the museum this weekend.
Yeah, let's go see.
Let's go have fun.
If you're not in my community, you should check out our community.
School.com slash LME.
SKOOL.com slash LME.
Another definition of checkout, to leave a place, to depart formally.
We need to check out of the hotel by noon.
Ah, yes, to check out of a hotel.
The opposite, of course, to check in.
She checked out early from the party.
She was at the party, but then she left.
She checked out early from the party.
And the third definition, to investigate, to verify information.
Check out the facts before you share them.
Before you tell people, check it out.
Make sure the facts are true.
I checked out the reviews online.
Before I decided to buy the product, I checked out the reviews.
I verified the information.
Very, very useful phrasal verb.
Moving right along to our listening tip.
So we're in a series, cancellation, reduction, blending, stop sounds, and linking.
Two weeks ago, we did linking.
Last week, stop sounds.
Today, blending.
To really build your listening skills, you need to build up your speaking skills.
In my DDM course, we have five areas we always focus on.
Again, today, we're gonna focus on blending.
There are two classic examples of blending.
The T plus Y and the D plus Y.
There are many more examples, but this will give you an idea of what blending is.
T plus Y. T plus Y. Like math.
So we have the word don't you.
Don't ends with a T. You begins with a Y. T plus Y. Don't you becomes don't you.
It gives us the CH sound.
Don't you.
Get, G-E-T, your, Y-O-U-R, get your.
If we blend it, it becomes get your, get your.
That's a C-H sound.
So what about D plus Y?
D plus Y equals J. Did you becomes did you, did you.
And that's a J sound.
Would you. becomes would you, would you.
Again, that is a, not a G, I'm sorry, a J sound, J sound.
Those are J sounds.
So T plus Y equals CH.
D plus Y equals J. And there are many other examples too.
Another common situation where we have blending would be like the 20-80 rule, okay?
But we'll learn about the 20-80 rule in another podcast.
All right, there you go.
Good stuff there.
If you can say it, you can hear it.
Remember that, guys.
If you can say it, you can hear it.
But sometimes we need to know why we pronounce things the way they do.
Communication tip.
Build rapport in calls.
Back to a business English or Zoom meetings.
If you're starting a meeting, people get nervous when they start a meeting.
Don't.
Just cut the chitchat and get right to work.
So if you're going to start a meeting, this is how you start.
Great to see you all.
How's everyone doing?
That's what you say.
Great to see you all.
How's everyone doing?
And do not wait for their answers.
Don't wait for their answers.
So for example, if I'm having a meeting with my finance team, I'll say, great to see you all.
How's everyone doing?
Rick, what have you got for me today?
Stephanie, tell me what I need to do today.
Bryce, how's it going?
What do I need to do today?
What do we need to know today?
So say hi to everybody, say how's everyone doing, and then choose one person and get to business.
Another situation.
I appreciate your perspective.
I appreciate your opinion on this blah, blah, blah subject.
John, please go first.
Hello, everybody.
Great to see you all.
How's everyone doing?
Thank you very much for joining this sales meeting today, talking about last month's sales.
John, please go first.
Don't waste time.
One more.
All right, everybody, let's brainstorm together.
Everybody, let's come up with some ideas.
Anybody have an idea?
Don't do that.
Be specific.
All right, everybody, let's brainstorm ideas.
Let's brainstorm together.
What do you think, John?
Go directly to somebody.
And don't choose the dumb person.
Don't choose the quiet person.
Choose the person who talks a lot.
That's the easiest way to start.
Does that make sense?
In business meetings, especially Zoom meetings, don't waste time.
Get straight to business.
I hope these tips were helpful.
They're very friendly, but they're very proactive, which is important.
All right, speaking of proactive, it's time for another request song.
They might be giants.
Istanbul, not Constantinople.
Weekly speaking challenge.
Last week's theme your weirdest science fact.
Oh my god, you guys are so great gian alex maslov, ada ada eva fulia, sergey.
I love it.
We're gonna go with evelyn and she included a video.
A what Cloaca, a shit-making robot, was invented 25 years ago by Vin Delvoye.
You feed it gourmet meals, and it provides you with a molded, flavored material.
The creator doesn't say who to contact in case of diarrhea.
Now, Evelyn...
Evelyn, you're a bit older than I am, so you can do whatever you want and you can say whatever you want.
However, I will tell everybody, shit is actually not a good word.
I don't recommend that you use the word shit.
Evelyn, you're fine.
I would recommend using the word turd, T-U-R-D, a turd-making robot, okay?
Oh, my God.
Let's go for another one.
Ana Gabriela.
A 2007 study conducted at the University of Cumes found that hamsters recover from jet lag more easily when given Viagra.
What a discovery.
Viagra for everyone, right?
If you're going on a trip, don't forget your Viagra.
So how would I explain that to my wife, though?
Let's say, my wife is staying home with the children and I have to go to Europe or I have to go to Asia.
Honey, honey, make sure you pack my Viagra.
I don't think my wife would like that idea.
Yeah.
All right, this week's theme, what makes you happy?
Questions to answer.
What activity makes you happy?
Why do you love it?
How often do you do it?
So my example is, listen to the end, bedtime makes me happy.
Not just because I get to go to sleep, but because my son Mikey tells Jimmy and I bedtime stories.
And we do this every night.
It's true.
My son, Mikey, he's seven years old.
And at the end of the day, every night, we go to bed.
They sleep on my bed, on me.
And then Mikey tells us a story.
He tells us about his day.
He talks about dinosaurs and dragons and robots.
Whatever it is, he can talk and talk.
And it's wonderful because in like 30 seconds, Jimmy's asleep.
And then Mikey never finishes his story.
He talks himself to sleep.
And that's very nice.
Keep your answers under 20 seconds.
That's part of the challenge.
To be concise.
Be fun.
Be clear.
And record your voice to practice real English speaking.
Saint-Provence, somebody to love a remake.
This is a request song.
It is September 29th, 2025, the 272nd day of the year.

I'm a coach.

We love you.
October 5th is also National Do Something Nice Day.
I like that.
Do something nice.
Do something nice.
Like me, I'm going to play a request song, Gideon's Heartbreak Anniversary.
It's your birthday.
It's your birthday.
Is it your birthday?
You got to let me know, then I can announce it.
September 29th today is Ian McKellen's birthday.

She's still with us.
That's beautiful.

Roxanne, you got to turn out the red light.
Sorry.

And cellist Yo-Yo Ma. will be 70 on October 7th.
Oops, not on October 2nd.
On October 3rd, Gwen Stefani will be 56 years old, singer from No Doubt.
Chubby Checker, another musician, The Twist.
Anyway, he's 84.
October 4th, Susan Sarandon is 79 years old.
Actress, Academy Award.
Most famous from the movie, Velma and Louise.
Great movie.
I'm not into chick flicks, but that's a good movie.
Speaking of chick flicks, Titanic actress Kate Winslet will be 50 years old on October 5th.
Yeah.
And musician...
Bob Geldof will be 74, Boomtown Rats musician.
Politically, I'm not wild about that guy, but music-wise, I actually like his music.
It's kind of weird, but I do like it.
So let's go with a couple of birthday boys.
We got Wyclef Jean, Fugees, Killing Me Softly, and Bob Geldof's Boomtown Rats.
I don't like Mondays.
And that, my friend, takes us to the end of the show.

So it's super cheap, okay?
The only reason we're charging is to cut on spam, okay?
Right now, the school platform is working really hard to reduce spam, robots, and weird people.
So we're holding off.
But yeah, so...
Join our community.
Even if it's a dollar a month, join it.
Right now, it's free.
School.com slash LME.
S-K-O-O-L dot com slash L-M-E.
If you're not there, then you're not serious about English.
Okay?
We have serious people in our community.
Somebody just asked today, do I have to buy a lesson?
No, you don't.
To be in our community, you do not have to buy lessons.
Okay?
You can.
We have all our lessons there.
You're free to buy the lessons.
They're fantastic.
The benefits are great.
There's live classes every day.
As I'm recording the podcast, right now there is a live class happening, a DDM VIP live class happening.
There's always something happening.
So no, you do not have to buy lessons.
If you want to, we'll take care of you.
The lessons are fantastic, but yeah.
School.com slash LME.
Join it.
Tell your friends.
Have fun.
The music version of the podcast is there.
So if you're listening to this like on iTunes or on YouTube, great place.
Shimalaya in China.
Wonderful, wonderful platform.
Thank you so much for listening.
What's the other one?
Spotify.
Thank you so much for listening.
But, you know, we can't give you the songs, right?
The copyrights.
So very restricted.
So here's a secret.
I work at a radio station.
Yeah, I do.
And because I work at a radio station, I also plug my podcast into the radio feed.
So that radio feed can go directly into my school community.
So you are listening.
You can listen to the songs and it sounds really cool.
The songs in this podcast, a bit of a different vibe, a little more relaxed, chill.
Yeah.
Maybe it's because September is ending.
September's a beautiful month.
You got the fall foliage where I live.
All the leaves are changing colors.
Stunning beauty.
Make sure you check out the pictures, school.com slash LME.
Make sure you check that out.
It's just beautiful.
Fall is the beginning of school for many people, a lot of people in europe and america.
In china they start school in the fall, so it's exciting.
Football season starts.
The weather changes right.
If you're down in brazil or australia, spring is beginning.
Weather's starting to warm up.
It's a time of change, and for some people it's kind of a sad time too.
There are lots of reasons for that.
I don't have to tell you.
The last song for our podcast is one of those songs that can hit you if you know about it.
But even if you don't know about the song much, it's still a beautiful song.
It's Green Days, Wake Me Up When September Ends.
And together, let's master English.
