We are going to have a new section called the weekly speaking challenge.
That's coming up, I'm pretty excited.
Let's go to the news.
And if you remember, first of all we're going to listen to a song.
It is T -Shirt! By Shaun Tell.
In Ohio, a man has built a custom roller coaster in his backyard for his Golden Retriever.
The small scaled ride features gentle dips and turns, and the dog Max happily hops into his cart every morning for a ride.
He loves the breeze, the owner says.
A public library in Seattle received a surprise in the mail.
A book due back in 1905, the dusty copy of A History of the United States, was found in a family attic in New Jersey.
Late fee? Waived. And finally, a female astronaut aboard Artemis 3 made history by baking the first cookie on the Moon using a special zero gravity oven the results still warm still chewy a little lunar crunch ha ha ha they weren't actually on the moon but they're in space let's go back here three simple stories you guys know what a roller coaster is right if you go to an amusement park like Disneyland or what else do we have in America?
Universal Studios? Great America?
Yeah there are several big...
Disney. You can just think Disneyland because I know in Asia and in Europe they have Disneyland.
That's the idea. Those those really long rides where you get into like like it's like a train but it's not a train and it goes up really high and then it goes down fast and there's circles and it goes upside down and it's really scary that's a rollercoaster well this guy some guy in Ohio America has 50 states one of the states is Ohio Ohio is right next to right south of Michigan right in the middle of America a man in Ohio built a roller coaster a custom roller coaster he made his own roller coaster how cool is that wow for his kids where did he build it in his backyard wow that is so cool for who for his golden
retriever a golden retriever is a type of dog beautiful dog it's uh it's basically like a lab if you know a lab lab a lab Labrador retriever they're very some beautiful dogs Wow I have a German shepherd dog I have three cats and I could never imagine building a roller coaster for my dog or cats I have two boys I could never imagine building a roller coaster for my boys it'd be cool anyway it's not obviously this is not a the giant Disneyland style rollercoaster, the small scale ride.
Ah, it's a small rollercoaster.
Features, gentle dips, so it goes down, but not too fast, that would be too scary.
And gentle turns, there are turns, but not too fast, and not too scary.
And the dog, oh the dog's name?
The dog's name is Max.
Max happily, ooh, my favorite, hops into his cart.
He gets onto the ride every morning for a ride.
Every morning when the dog wakes up, ooh, let's go to the roller coaster.
Oof, my favorite! The owner says he loves the breeze, the wind that you feel when you enjoy a roller coaster.
Oh my gosh, yeah. America has millions and millions of problems but Max doesn't.
Max is living the good life.
Ah, if you can do it, do it, right?
Ah, the second story, amazing.
A public library in Seattle.
Seattle is in the state of Washington, which is on the West Coast, on the Pacific Ocean.
Seattle is very close to Vancouver, Canada, right?
A public library in Seattle received a surprise in the mail.
Ooh, a package! A book!
They received a book...
...but the book was due back.
It should have been returned.
The book was due, D -U -E, in 1905!
120 years ago! Somebody borrowed this book and was supposed to return it to the library in 1905 and kept the book.
And obviously forgot about the book until recently a hundred and twenty years later Wow The dusty copy it's an old book I'm sure probably no one has ever read the book.
So it's got dust on the cover It's kind of a little dirty, right?
It's a hundred and twenty years old the dusty copy of a history of the United States That's the title of the book a history of the United States was found in a family attic a Family attic attic is that room above the house Where usually nobody goes?
ghosts Can live in the attic att IC at my house we have an attic and We never go up there I go up there every so often To check the insulation to see ventilation Uh, there's a bunch of junk up there from the previous owner of the house, some boxes and stuff.
There's a motorcycle helmet.
Kinda weird, but anyway, I don't think there's any ghosts.
I hope not. I didn't see any books.
Maybe there is a book.
Maybe I should check.
Anyway, the book was found in a family attic in New Jersey.
New Jersey, that's another state!
That's right next to New York, on the East Coast. My God, this book traveled a long way.
So the book is 120 years late.
So in America, if you borrow a book from a library, they give you a fine if you're late.
You have to pay money if you're late.
So, my goodness, what do you think the late fee was?
Late fee? It was waived.
W -A -I -V -E -D. That means, it's very similar to W -A -V -E.
Wave. Like wave goodbye.
It was waived. They said, ah, forget it.
That's ok. You don't have to pay.
Thank you for the book.
Forget it. You don't have to pay.
It was waived. Wow.
Would you return it?
If you found a book 120 years old that's supposed to go to the library, if you found it would you return it?
I would probably keep it yeah, I think I would.
The third story, it's kind of cool, a female astronaut, I don't know why that's important but they made sure to say that, aboard the Artemis 3.
Do you know what the Artemis -3 is?
The Artemis -3 is actually a planned mission that's going to happen next year they say they want to take go back to the moon that's the Artemis -3 mission but the idea is one of the things that they want to test is you know making food right up in space in zero gravity so a couple years ago they actually did this they baked a cookie in zero gravity zero gravity you know where you're floating in space so the stories I kind of finagled the story but the story goes a female astronaut aboard Artemis 3 mmm -hmm actually Artemis three is gonna be next year but the idea made history they will make history
she will make history by baking the first cookie on the moon so they actually baked the It was a female astronaut.
I have her name. Christina Cook.
Yeah, she's Christina Cook.
She cooked. Maybe because of her name.
She cooked the first chocolate chip cookies in the International Space Station.
She did that several years ago.
And now they're going to take this process and try it on the moon.
So anyway, the female astronaut, Christina Koch, aboard Artemis 3, actually it was the International Space Station made history.
She did make history several years ago, and maybe in the future.
Next year she'll make history again by baking the first cookie on the moon, hopefully next year, using a special zero -gravity oven.
So normally when you cook, when you bake a cookie, I did a lot of research on this story, when you normally bake a cookie it's like 20 minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit this is American baking standards but on the moon it took two hours because of the zero gravity thing yeah isn't that wild so here on earth it takes 15 minutes 20 minutes to bake a cookie but on the moon it took or in space it took two hours 2 hours to bake the cookie.
Wow. Uhh, and they had to let it cool down for a long time too.
The results, and this is back several years ago, still warm, still delicious, still chewy, like chocolate chip cookies should be chewy.
Nom nom nom. And a little lunar crunch. A little crunchy.
Lunar meaning space because they're out in space.
It means the moon. But anyway it's a silly story And it's a combination of something that happened in the past and hopefully something that will happen Next year, they say, do you think the United States will go to the moon next year?
NASA? Do you think the United States went to the moon 50 some years ago?
People are questioning the history Yeah, I don't know I'll say this, I know we will go to the moon again and you remember have you seen the pictures of the American astronauts on the moon and they put that American flag there on the moon right?
You've seen that right?
Well it should still be there, and I want pictures.
I Don't care who goes to them.
Is it India who's going to the moon next?
Is it going to be India Russia China, Japan France?
Who's going to the America who's going next?
I don't know. I don't know who is going next but whoever goes next to the moon Show me those pictures of the American flag I'm a little skeptical my understanding now is that it's extremely difficult and then after did you see the Jeff Bezos?
his wife and the other female, the crew that went into space and they came back down to earth and they opened the door themselves on the space capsule thing.
I'm so skeptical. Everything's weird, everything's weird, I don't know.
Did we go to the moon?
I think so, but I don't know.
So show me the flag.
Will we go to the moon next year.
I kind of doubt it.
I want that to happen.
I don't know. Will it happen?
Will Elon Musk be first to the moon or will NASA...
I mean, again, you know, this time, will NASA be first?
Will China be first?
France? Who's gonna be the next country to go to the moon?
Is it gonna be Bezos and his Those are the three stories, I hope that you enjoyed them.
I've got three songs.
Dog Days Are Over, Florence and the Machine, and Love Roller Coaster.
Red Hot Chili Peppers is coming right after I read the three stories one more time.
In Ohio, a man has built a custom roller coaster in his back yard...
...for his Golden Retriever.
The small scale ride features gentle dips and turns.
and the dog, Max, happily hops into his cart every morning for a ride.
He loves the breeze, the owner says.
A public library in Seattle received a surprise in the mail, a book due back in 1905.
The dusty copy of, A History of the United States, was found in a family attic in New Jersey.
Late fee? Waved. And finally, a female astronaut aboard Artemis 3 made history by baking the first cookie on the moon using a special zero -gravity oven.
The results? Still warm, still chewy, a little lunar crunch. Where education and entertainment come together, let's master English.
Do it! How ya doing everybody?
This is Country Shane and I'm bringing you the facts.
Hey everybody, baking a cookie on the moon?
Oh, that's tricky stuff.
In microgravity, heat doesn't rise like it does on earth.
So ovens in space need to push the air, forced air.
And the dough, the cookie dough, it floats around.
food, so they have to use a special container.
And unfortunately, you cannot open up a cookie and eat it like we do here on Earth in a spaceship because the cookie crumbs could get into the air filters and cause big problems. It's a tricky event, baking cookies in space.
Thank you very much Country Shane.
And one more piece of interesting information, when they baked those cookies on the International Space Station, they could smell the cookies.
So the smell does travel in space.
The astronauts could all smell the delicious cookies.
And speaking of, April 14 last week, Blue Origin, their new Shepard rocket, carried Six women Katy Perry singer Journalists Gayle King engineer aisha beau civil rights activists Amanda Nune and Producer Carrie Anne Flynn Oh and pilot and also wife to Jeff Bezos Lauren Sanchez They were weightless for a couple minutes in space and People made lots of rumors and whatnot about them.
The big question was, can we call these six women astronauts?
And the answer is actually no, because they didn't do something.
There's an actual qualification to become an official astronaut.
They were simply tourists.
Yeah, they were tourists.
So one of the funny memes is they're astro nots so astronaut a s t r o n a u t astronaut but Katy Perry is an astronaut a s t r o n o t you know sorry a long time ago Katy Perry made a song and I thought the song was about me it was Katy Perry and Kanye West It was called ET ET.
I thought the song was about me because I am an ET English teacher But as I found out it's actually like about space extra -terrestrial Take it away, Katy Let's master English as an adult.
Step seven. The seven, the eight steps to mastering English as an adult.
Today's step seven.
Expand your vocabulary.
We all many of us all want to expand our vocabulary.
Use better words, bigger words, makes us sound intelligent and that's good, that's cool.
Many adults think that learning more vocabulary is important.
My answer, yes and no. In real communication, even at work in business, daily English is much more important than learning big words.
We talked about daily English in the last podcast. But learning new words is good.
So there are three areas that I always recommend you should explore.
Three areas of vocabulary.
Oh, I want to learn more vocabulary cool.
What are you gonna learn well?
I've organized it for you This is what you should learn Okay And the good news is the new words that you will learn in these three areas will be easy to memorize So what are the three areas I call them the three?
peas P professional P Passion P The three Ps, for vocabulary.
Professional vocabulary, words you use at work.
Now the good news, you learn these words at work.
And because you use these words all the time at work, they're easy to remember.
Now you can continue to expand on work related vocabulary.
How? by listening to podcasts about your work by watching videos and reading articles in your field.
So if you're an accountant and you love your work and you want to expand your accounting vocabulary believe me there are accounting podcasts and videos about accounting and articles about accounting that you should read and expand your professional vocabulary.
Passion vocabulary.
This one's really important.
Passion. What is it that you love?
What are your hobbies?
What are your interests?
Do you like dogs? Again, start listening to podcasts about dogs.
Watching videos about dogs, reading articles about dogs in English.
They're everywhere, they are, they're everywhere.
Dogs is, I mean choose golden retrievers or choose German Shepherds or choose Chihuahuas.
Whatever the dog is that you like, that you love, get specific and start expanding your vocabulary in that area if you love dogs.
Maybe you love cooking.
Cool. What kind of cooking?
What about Mexican food?
Yeah. Well then start listening to podcasts Watching videos and reading articles about cooking Mexican food in English Maybe you like the NBA the National Basketball Association Right the Dallas Mavericks perhaps the team in Dallas Texas Then start listening to podcasts watching videos and reading articles about the Dallas Mavericks in English Not only will you learn new words, you will probably start making new friends with the same interests if you look for other dog lovers, or other Mexican food lovers, and Mavericks fans.
This is what social media is for, right?
If you love dogs or the Dallas Mavericks, or Mexican food, then you should use social media and follow people who also like the same thing.
You're gonna learn and make friends.
So professional vocabulary, passion vocabulary, and the third P, personal personal vocabulary.
Think about every conversation you had today in your language.
Not in English, in your language.
Every conversation with your husband or with your wife, with your boss, your co -workers, your employees, your students, your teachers, your professors, at the restaurant, at the coffee shop, at the store with a neighbor with a friend with your kids every conversation you had no matter how small even your social media interactions now the question is everything in your language the question is can you say immediately all of those conversations in English without pause without translating probably not well Well, write down those words.
Those are your words.
Don't write down what your husband said, don't write down what your wife said, write down what you said.
Your words. Write down your words.
Those are words you use every day.
And you need to know those words.
And the list might be big on the first day.
But over time, that list will get smaller and smaller.
And those words will be easy to remember.
Because they're YOUR words.
The 3 Ps. As adults, we do NOT need to focus on learning words that we'll never use.
We need to focus on words that we actually use.
In my eight -week speaking course and in my online English camp, I give daily speaking tasks to all the members and and it's their chance to start using Your English or their English and the big bonus They always get checked by my team of coaches If you're not a member of my eight -week speaking course or my English camp, you should think about it.

It's a it's a song by Pierre Bachelet.
I hope my pronunciation is okay.
It's called Emmanuel.
We're studying Seinfeld in DDM VIP and in Seinfeld there was a Rattan chair and Hajme was just inspired by that chair and he remembered the very romantic movie Emanuele and this song is rather quite romantic so if you have your love nearby Crank the music and maybe some romance will happen Is it your birthday, wedding anniversary, day of retirement, something happening?
