Hi, I'm Dora and welcome to Radioheadspace.
I am so glad that you're here.
Have you ever tried walking on a balance beam?
If you haven't, let me save you some time.
It's not as easy as it looks.
I learned this the hard way at a friend's kid's birthday party.
They had a backyard gymnastics setup and while the kids were off doing cartwheels I thought, how hard could this be?
I stepped onto the balance beam and immediately started wobbling.
And the point is, the harder I tried to stay perfectly balanced, the harder it got.
Then, my friend's 7 -year -old niece, who for the record has been taking gymnastics classes for like three months she hopped up and walked across the beam with zero hesitation.
Before she ran off she tossed me a quick pointer.
You're looking at your feet.
You've got to look ahead.
She skipped away and I was left to contemplate my entire existence.
And that moment stuck with me.
Because isn't that how we approach life.
We try so hard to control everything our careers, relationships, emotions.
We hyper -focus on every small detail, convinced that if we just try harder, we can force everything into balance.
But what if balance isn't something we achieve by gripping tighter?
What if it's something that happens when we let go?
In Buddhism there is a concept called Upaka, translated as equanimity.
It's the ability to maintain mental steadiness despite external conditions.
Not because we control everything, but because we trust our ability to adapt, no matter what happens.
And believe it or not, tightrope walkers understand this better than most. There's an old zen teaching about a young acrobat who wanted to master the tightrope.
He trained obsessively, believing that the secret was keeping his body perfectly rigid.
He thought if he could just hold himself steady enough, he'd never fall.
His teacher, a seasoned tightrope walker, watched as the student tensed every muscle.
His arms trembling, his breath held.
Of course, the harder he tried, the worse he wobbled.
Finally the teacher said, stop trying to be still, you're not a statue. The student looked at him, confused, but I need to be balanced.
The teacher smiled.
Balance is not the absence of movement.
It's the ability to move with the rope, not against it.
The student took a deep breath, loosened his body, and instead of resisting every tiny shift, he adjusted.
A slight lean here, a gentle step there.
And suddenly, he wasn't fighting the tightrope anymore, he was flowing with it.
Balance, he realized, wasn't something he could force, it was something he had to trust. And that lesson applies to so much more than just tight rope walking.
Think about the last time you felt like you were losing control, maybe it was a project that wasn't coming together, a relationship that fell off, or just a general sense of uncertainty about what's next.
What was your instinct?
To grip tighter, to over correct, to force things into place?
Well, what if instead you just let go a little?
What if you trusted that you'd adjust just as you move forward, rather than trying to freeze everything into perfection?
When I finally stopped staring at my feet on that balance beam and looked ahead, something shifted.
I still wobbled, but I didn't panic.
I adjusted, and step -by -step I found my way across.
So today, notice where you're gripping too hard, where you're trying to force balance instead of allowing yourself to adjust. Balance isn't about standing still, it's about moving with what life gives you, and when you stop trying to control every step, you might just find yourself walking with a little more ease.
Well, that's all for today.
Thank you so much for being here, and I'll see you tomorrow.
