Welcome back to another episode of Radiohead Space.
I'm your host Dora Kamau.
All right. So the other day, I was listening to the Huberman Lab podcast, which, if you don't know, I am obsessed.
This particular episode covered how meditation works, and the host mentioned a study titled, A Wandering Mind is an Unhappy Mind.
In this study, two psychologists at Harvard found that a wandering mind comes at an emotional cost.
In other words, thinking about things that are not present, that are not happening in the moment, can decrease our sense of happiness.
After drawing inspiration from that podcast episode and study, I wanted to explore the different ways that we can work with our minds.
And I know that sounds pretty broad, but it's also the essence of meditation.
Seeing our minds, their patterns and tendencies clearly, and learning to work with them, not against them.
Now, when I say work with our thoughts, what I mean is to explore, examine, and look at our thoughts and our minds, instead of trying to push them away.
Or get rid of them.
If there's anything I want you to know, it's that mind wandering isn't a bad thing.
In fact, there's been tons of research to show that mind wandering is normal and natural.
We spend 47 % of our waking lives lost in thought.
And this can be attributed to something called our default mode network.
It's a system in the brain that plays a role in conjuring those wandering thoughts that we engage in every single day.
This includes those spontaneous thoughts, rooted in the distant past or far future—basically any thought that is unrelated to the present moment.
So, here are three ways you can work with the mind when we're experiencing a flurry of thoughts and emotions.
Number 1. Try Using Imagery A few years ago, a teacher of mine had shared this tip with me when I was struggling to work with overwhelming thoughts.
She invited me to imagine I was sitting in a movie theater and envisioning the movie of my mind.
Seeing the different thoughts play out on the screen and just sitting back and observing how my mind was creating all these different scenarios.
I found this incredibly helpful because for once, I was able to watch the storm of my mind from the window instead of being caught up in it.
Number two, investigate the evidence.
This is a technique that my therapist shared with me and I found it extremely helpful, particularly when I'm having self -limiting thoughts, perhaps thoughts of self -doubt or insecurity.
I'll ask myself a series of questions like, is this thought true?
Is this thought your own?
Is it helpful? How is this thought serving you in this moment?
By questioning our thoughts in this way, it allows us to stay connected to the present moment.
Lastly, try dropping the story.
As we have a thought arise in our awareness, there is usually a story or narrative that comes with it, which then shows our response to that thought.
We may start to think about that one time, or a moment that feels similar to this one, on and on and on.
And this keeps that wandering alive.
When you notice the mind has wandered, note the thought as a story.
and see if you can come back to the present moment.
And if you're having a hard time letting go of narratives, I suggest looking at our video on the app called letting go.
Now these tips can be used when you're meditating but also when you're engaging in your everyday life.
So try these out and let me know how they work for you.
I'll leave it here for now but I'll see you right back here tomorrow where we will decode meditation jargon.
Be well and take care, my friends.
