Today we are going to learn phrasal verbs in English.
This lesson is very easy, very useful, and perfect for daily English speaking.
These phrasal verbs are used again and again in real life, so learning them will help you speak English more naturally.
Before we begin, let's understand one important question.
What is a phrasal verb?
A phrasal verb is made of two parts.
The first part is a verb, and the second part is a small word such as on, off, up, in, or out.
When we join these two parts together, they create a new meaning.
Now, listen carefully, repeat after me and try to understand each sentence.
Let's begin our practice.
Put on.
Put on means to wear clothes or shoes.
Before going outside, a parent may say, put on your shoes.
We can also say, he puts on his jacket when the weather is cold.
Take off.
Take off means to remove clothes.
At home, you may hear someone say, take off your shoes.
Another example is, she takes off her coat after coming inside.
Run away Run away means to escape or leave quickly.
In stories, we often hear the thief runs away.
We can also say do not run away from problems, which means face your problems.
Come off.
Come off means to fall off or separate from something.
For example, the button comes off my shirt.
We can also say the lid comes off easily, take out.
Take out means to remove something from a place at home.
Someone may say take out the garbage.
In a clinic we may hear the dentist takes out a tooth.
Look after.
Look after means to take care of someone or something.
A mother looks after her baby every day.
You can also say please look after my bag when you go somewhere.
Grow up.
Grow up means to become an adult.
We often say, children grow up fast.
A child may say, I want to be a teacher when I grow up.
Tear up Tear up means to break paper into pieces.
When someone is angry, they may tear up the paper.
Another example is, she tears up the letter.
Pick up.
Pick up means to lift something.
A teacher may say, pick up the book.
We can also say, he picks up his bag before leaving.
Fill in.
Fill in means to write information in a form.
At an office you may hear, fill in your name.
Another example is, please fill in this form.
Get up.
Get up means to wake up or rise from bed.
Some people say, I get up early.
Another sentence is, she gets up at six every morning.
Get on.
Get on means to enter or board a bus, train, or any vehicle.
When a bus arrives, someone may say, please get on the bus.
In daily life, we also say, I get on the train every day when we talk about our routine travel.
Get off means to leave or exit a bus, train, or vehicle.
For example, when you reach your stop, you can say, I get off the bus here.
Another example is, she gets off the train when she reaches her station.
