Everybody was comfortable.

Ow!
I thought you said acupuncture would make me feel better.
Trust me, it will.
It's just not easy finding the right nerve points under all this, uh... Fur?
I was gonna say fur.
Sure you were.
Who am I to judge a warrior based on his size?
I mean, look at me.
I'm over here.
Maybe you should take a look at this again.
Oh, okay.
I know Master Shifu's trying to inspire me and all, but if I didn't know any better I'd say he was trying to get rid of me.
I know he can seem kind of heartless.
But, you know, he wasn't always like that.
According to legend, there was once a time when Master Shifu actually used to smile.
No.
Yes, before tai lung, uh yeah, we're not really supposed to talk about him.
Well, if he's going to stay here, he should know.
Guys guys, i know about tai lung.
He was a student, the first ever to master the thousand scrolls of kung fu, and then he turned bad and i was in jail.
He wasn't just a student.
Acupuncture is a practice in traditional Chinese medicine consisting of the treatment for pain or illness in which thin needles are inserted just under the surface of the skin at special points around the body.
By the way, the word acupuncture in English comes from another more general word, puncture.
A puncture is a small hole in something such as the skin caused by a sharp object.
You may also see it as a verb.
For example, that nail punctured my bicycle tire.
I thought you said acupuncture would make me feel better.
Trust me, it will.
It's just not easy finding the right nerve points under all this fur.
I was going to say fur.
In acupuncture, the nerve points or the pressure points are the specific places in the human body where the needles can be inserted to cause a positive effect on the person's health.
As a noun, fat in this case refers to the mass of flesh under the skin of humans and animals that stores energy and keeps them warm.
For example, I am a bit overweight, look at all this fat!
On the other hand, fur is the thick hair that covers the bodies of some animals.
So the joke here is that you could easily mistake fat for fur in animals, and master mantis takes advantage of this fact and says this it's just not easy finding the right nerve points under all this fur.
I was gonna say fur.
Sure you were.
Who am i to judge a warrior based on his size?
I mean, look at me, who am I to?
Is an expression you can use to question whether you have the right authority to do something or to make a judgment.
For example, why don't you tell her she's made a mistake?
Who am I to tell a doctor she's made a mistake?
I'm just an assistant.
Check out this other example.
How long will it last?
Would Do you really think Andy is going to take you to college or on his honeymoon?
Andy's growing up, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Who am I to break up the Roundup gang?
So what Mantis means here is that he doesn't feel he has the right to judge a kung fu fighter based on their size, considering how small he is while still having the title of master.
Now let's learn some native pronunciation with this phrase.
Did you hear how Viper pronounced these words?
This is a great example of how connected speech works in English.
First let's listen to how she connects the K sounds at the end of the words to the vowel sounds that follow them in the next word.
This is a very common linking that happens in all accents of English.
Listen to these other examples.
And then you will fulfill your destiny and take over the restaurant.
Just as I took it over from my father, who took it over from his father, who took it over from my father, who took it over from his father, who won it from a friend in a game of mahjong.
And all you get are three square meals a day of shame.
With this pair for dessert.
We'll take on Shen.
We'll take on Shen.
And prove to all those who are hungry for justice and honor that Kung Fu still lives.
Yeah.
We can learn Kung Fu.
We can be just like you.
Just like you.
Next, she also connects the T in the word at with the one in the word this, resulting in the sound a.
This
So when we put everything together, this is what we get.
Now let's practice and repeat after her.

So Poe says that if he didn't know any better, he would say Shifu was trying to get rid of him.
I know Master Shifu's trying to inspire me and all, but if I didn't know any better I'd say he was trying to get rid of me.
To know better in this case refers to Poe's current knowledge, belief or presumption.
So Poe is saying that, although Master Shifu is trying to train and inspire him, he could in fact be using this as a way to get rid of him.
What does it mean to get rid of somebody?
To get rid of somebody usually means to make someone go away because you do not like them or because they are causing problems.
Oh, right.
I'll go talk to him.
Carry on, everyone.
Ralph.
Also when talking about things and objects.
To get rid of something normally means to throw away or destroy something you do not want anymore.
I know Master Shifu's trying to inspire me and all, but if I didn't know any better I'd say he was trying to get rid of me.
I know he can seem kind of heartless but you know he wasn't always like that.
If you describe someone as heartless, you mean that they don't care about other people's feelings.
They have no emotion or concern for others.
Mantis is saying that, even though Master Shifu seems insensitive and does not care about others, he was actually not like that in the past.
According to legend, there was once a time when Master Shifu actually used to smile.
Now, yes.
A scroll is a long roll of paper or a similar material with writing on it.
The scrolls of Kung Fu referred to in Kung Fu Panda are the scrolls that teach warriors Kung Fu techniques and knowledge.
If you were the first ever to do something, you were the first in all time to do it.
No one in history had done it before.
This application of the word ever allows you to collocate it with any superlative, such as best or greatest, for example, for the same effect.
Dad, you're gonna love this.
It's like the coolest thing ever.
This is the Hall of Heroes, home of the most priceless kung fu artifacts in all of China.
And then he turned bad and I was in jail.
He wasn't just a student.
Shifu found him as a cub.
And he raised him as a son.
And when the boy showed talent in Kung Fu, Shifu trained him.
He believed in him.
He told him he was destined for greatness.
It was never enough for Tai Lung.
He wanted the Dragon Scroll, but Oogway saw darkness in his heart and refused.
Outraged, Tai Lung laid waste to the valley.
He tried to take the scroll by force, and Shifu had to destroy what he had created.
But how could he?
Shifu loved Tai Lung like he had never loved anyone before.
Or since.
And now, he has a chance to make things right.
To train the true Dragon Warrior.
And he's stuck with you.
A big, fat panda who treats it like a joke.
Oh, that is it!
Wait!
My fault!
I accidentally tweaked his facial nerve!
A cub is a young carnivorous mammal.
Bears, wolves and lions are a few examples of other animals that have cubs.
To raise somebody is to take care of somebody who is young until they are grown, making sure he or she develops and lives to become an adult.
And then I made a decision that would change my life forever.
To make my soup without radishes and to raise you as my own son.
So Tigress says that Master Shifu found Tai Lung as a baby and raised him as his son, meaning he took care of Tai Lung as if he were his own son.
And when the boy showed talent in Kung Fu, Shifu trained him.
He believed in him.
He told him he was destined for greatness.
Do you know the difference in meaning between saying that you believe someone and that you believe in someone?
If you believe someone that simply means you accept what they say as the truth.
Now, to believe in someone is a phrase that can have a few different applications, but in general it means that you have faith or confidence in somebody.
In the context of the scene, Master Shifu had confidence that Tai Lung would be successful, that his destiny was to be great.
See this example with this collocation.
You are a gift.
For what?
If anyone can resolve the past, if anyone can save Arendelle and free this forest, it's you.
I believe in you, Elsa.
She means Tai Lung would always want more knowledge and power.
He was never satisfied with how much he had.
It was never enough.
The Dragon Scroll in Kung Fu Panda is a legendary scroll written by Master Oogway that contains the secret to unlimited power.
Oogway declared that only the Dragon Warrior would be worthy or have the right to read the Dragon Scroll.
But Oogway saw darkness in his heart and refused.
Outraged, Tai Lung laid waste to the valley.
If you are outraged, you have strong feelings of anger and resentment as a reaction to insult or injustice.
Tai Lung felt disrespected when he was not granted the Dragon Scroll and was outraged by the way he was treated.
He then, as Tigress says, laid waste to the valley.
If you lay waste to a place, you are causing extensive destruction to the area.
For example, the war has laid waste to large regions of the countryside.
He tried to take the scroll by force, and Shifu had to destroy what he had created.
But how could he?
As you may know, if you do something right, you are doing it the proper way, following instructions or the rules.
Now to make things right implies that you've already done something wrong or upset someone, for example, and you now want to make reparations.
You want to fix the situation.
For example, you borrowed money from a friend a long time ago and completely forgot about it.
Then, months later, you remember about it and tell them that to make things right, you'll pay them back with a little extra money.
Check out this other example.
There you are.
We missed you at dinner.
What is it, darling?
Dad, I've been thinking about what you said.
And I'm gonna set things right.
Ah, excellent.
That's my girl.
It was a mistake to bring Shrek here.
I'm gonna go out and find him.
If you are stuck with somebody or something you cannot get rid of or choose something or somebody else instead.
Tigress says Master Shifu is stuck with Po because Master Oogway chose Po to be the dragon warrior.
So Shifu must follow his master's orders and train Po to become a kung fu master.
That's it, in this case, is an expression used when you are done doing something.
Tigress thinks Poe is making a silly face to make fun of her and gets angry at him.
So she says, that is it, meaning she is done being patient with him and trying to help him.
You like this?
Hey, hey, that's it.
No one touches little Mike.
By the way, did you notice how she pronounced that sentence?
Not only has she connected the three words, but we can also hear the sound of two letters change.
First, the T sound in the word that turned into a tap T sound when linking to the word is.
That is.
That is then the s in is becomes a z sound as it connects to a vowel in the word it, resulting in one continuous sound.
Is it that?
Is it that?
Is it a big fat panda who treats it like a joke?
Oh, that is it.
Wait, my fault.
I accidentally tweaked his facial nerve and may have also stopped his heart.
Literally, to tweak means twist or pull sharply.
For example, I tweaked my ankle running.
Mantis just means he accidentally hit a nerve in Po's skin that caused him to make this face.
By the way, informally and more commonly speaking, the verb to tweak also refers to modifying and improving something by making adjustments to it.
If you're enjoying watching this lesson, then you'll definitely enjoy watching our lesson on the classic animation Shrek, where you'll learn both formal and informal vocabulary with English and Scottish accents.
