Thank you very much.
Yeah, that was incredible.
So that bunny seems to be all anyone is talking about.
I mean, who would have thought Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, from a small town near San Juan, Puerto Rico, would go from bagging groceries to headlining the Super Bowl halftime show in less than 10 years?
So in today's lesson we're going to see Bad Bunny at his most powerful, giving a passionate Grammy speech about love over hate, geeking out, meeting his hero, Adam Sandler, and talking about his legendary WWE matches.
So let's dive in.
And by the way, are you like me and you have a difficult time remembering new expressions?
Well, in learning six different languages, I depended a lot on spaced repetition software.
This is scientific technology that works with your brain so you never forget new words.
And that's why the best experience for this lesson with Bad Bunny is with our real-life app, where you have spaced repetition software to help you remember the most important expressions like bagging groceries, geek out and headlining forever.

Before I say thanks to God, I'm gonna say eyes out.
We're not savage, we're not animals, we're not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans.
I want to say to the people, I know it's tough to know, not to hate on these days.
And I was thinking sometime we get contaminados.
I don't know how to say that in English.
The hate get more powerful with more hate.
The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love.
So, please, we need to be different.
If we fight, we have to do it with love.
We don't hate them.
We love our people, we love our family, and that's the way to do it, with love.
Don't forget that, please.
Thank you.
So in his Grammy speech, Bad Bunny starts with a powerful statement.
Before I say thanks to God, I'm going to say eyes out.
Now ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the US government agency that enforces immigration laws and has been involved in many controversial deportations.
So when Bad Bunny says ICE out, he's demanding that ICE leave or end their operations.
This was an incredibly brave moment on live television at one of music's biggest nights.
Here, Bad Bunny is pushing back against dehumanizing language.
When someone is called savage, it means they're considered uncivilized or wild, like an animal.
It's a deeply offensive term that historically has been used to justify discrimination and even violence against indigenous peoples and immigrants.
Don't confuse this with the slang use of this word, which is actually positive, like bold or clever.
We could say that Bad Bunny's halftime show was savage, really doing things no artist has done before.
Or if someone insults you and you have the perfect comeback, your friends could call your response savage.
Listen to this other example.
Savage.
And notice he also rejects the term aliens.
In US immigration law, aliens is actually the official legal term for foreign nationals.
But think about it. when you hear alien what comes to mind space creatures right something not human something other bad bunny is pointing out how this legal language itself is dehumanizing okay so bad bunny is an english learner just like you don't get me wrong he communicates himself beautifully but he does make mistakes sometimes let's check out a couple of these i want to say to the people i know is Bad Bunny uses the phrasal verb hate on here.
He actually should have just said hate.
He wants to say it's difficult not to hate nowadays.
But what's the difference between hate and hate on anyways?
Well, hate is direct.
I hate broccoli or they hate each other.
But hate on is more informal and it means to criticize or disrespect someone or something.
For example, people are always hating on pineapple pizza or why are you hating on her new haircut?
Listen to these examples.
I'm sorry.
Did you say Hillary Clinton?
Something about Hillary Clinton?
Nothing, mom.
Oh, I was at the trendy thing they're teaching now to hate on Hillary Clinton.
And here's a quick grammar note.
Bad Bunny says sometime but he means sometimes.
And I was thinking sometime we get, And I was thinking sometime we get.
So we can learn from Bad Bunny that it's okay that we don't know everything.
He recognizes that he's still improving his English and the only way to get better is by admitting that you're still learning, but not letting that get in the way of using the language for its true purpose communication.
And let's just listen to Bad Bunny's inspiring final words a last time.
This is such a beautiful message.
Bad Bunny is basically saying that responding to hate with more hate only makes things worse.
It's like a vicious cycle.
The only force strong enough to break that cycle is love.
And Benito is such an inspiring guy.
Just check out another one of the messages that he shared during his halftime show.
You too, Debre.
Benito's words at the Grammys and halftime speech really make me emotional, because our mission here at RealLife English is to create the world's most trusted space for global citizens to not just learn English but to live it.
And the global citizen part of this is really important.
As we always say here, no matter what divides us, like race nationality gender, politics or sexual orientation, what unites us as human beings is far greater.
And that's exactly the kind of message that we can see Benito courageously fighting for.
All right, let's move on to something a bit lighter.
Did you know that Benito is also trying his hand at acting?
He was recently in a movie with Adam Sandler, Happy Gilmore 2.
And in this interview, the two of them share how they met.
But the first time that I saw him, it was on the Lakers game.
That's right.
Oh, wow.
I think I was with my daughter, right?
And she started hitting me.
She's going, there's bad buddy, there's bad buddy.
And then we locked up eyes, and I gave you some love across the court.
Bro, I was a little tipsy.
And I was, oh, my God, he's here.
Because I was waiting for that moment.
I've been in a lot of Lakers games.
I saw every celebrity, but never Adam Sandler.
So I was, he is here.
When he did the eye contact with me and said, bro, I cried.
Really?
That was so touching.
In casual English, people often use going instead of saying when telling a story about a conversation they had.
Here are some examples.
I bet Adam is a bit more difficult for you to understand than Benito, right?
That is partly because he uses connected speech.
That's how we natives cut, reduce, and link our words together when speaking fluently.
Like here.
Notice how that all just flowed together?
We have a tap T in started, which happens when a T is between two vowels in American English, just like in how Adam says daughter.
So it's not daughter, but daughter, daughter.
It's not started, but started.
Started.
The T's in hitting took a different pattern.
They became a glottal T. The sound is cut off at the back of the throat.
Like when a child makes a mistake, they say uh-oh, uh-oh.
It's that same sound.
Instead of hitting, we hear hittin'.
And the G is dropped.
Hittin'.
Hittin'.
Let's put it all together.
Your speaking will only improve with lots and lots of practice.
So listen to Adam again and try to say that just like him.
Now here comes one of my favorite expressions in the scene.
And then we locked up eyes and I gave you some love across the... Bro, I was a little tipsy.
What do you think lock eyes means?
To close your eyes, to look at someone intensely, to look away quickly.
That's right!
This adds more emotional intensity than just saying to look at someone.
Think about in movies when two characters lock eyes across a crowded room and you just know something is about to happen.
We can also say make eye contact with someone, which basically is the same as locking eyes, but less intense.
We heard Benito use this later.
When he did the like eye contact with me and said hi And here's another example.
And did you catch what Adam did after they locked eyes?
He gave Bad Bunny some love.
This is a casual way of saying that he showed appreciation and respect.
Maybe he nodded, waved, or gave a thumbs up.
You might hear variations like give it up for or show some love.
For instance, when Chris Rock hosted the Oscars in 2016, he was constantly telling the audience to show some love for the nominees and performers.
And we want to give you some love with your English.
One way we're doing this is with microlessons on the RealLife app.
You just need 10 to 15 minutes a day.
You watch a short scene, learn a couple of new words and then practice speaking them in a real conversation with your AI coach.
So why don't you try it?
Download the app for free with the link down in the description.
And let's see what happened next with Adam and Benito's first encounter.
The court here refers to the basketball court, the playing surface where the game happens.
But we use this word with lots of playing areas.
Tennis court, volleyball court, squash court.
Interestingly, you play on a court but in a field.
Soccer field, football field.
Alright, let's check out your knowledge with another quick quiz.
What do you think tipsy means?
Exactly.
You might also hear people say buzzed.
It's that feeling where you're relaxed, maybe a little giggly, but still in control.
Hey fellas, are you just getting back from lunch now?
Bob took me to Capello's.
We got a little tipsy.
And let's wrap up this clip by correcting a common grammar mistake.
Bad Bunny says on a Lakers game, but the correct preposition is at.
We say at a game when we're physically present at the event.
Here's the pattern.
I'm at the concert.
We met at the basketball game.
She was at the Super Bowl.
We use on for media.
I watched it on TV or I heard it on the radio.
Moving on to our final interview.
Did you know that Benito has done some professional wrestling?
Let's hear about his painful experience.
So, in my humble opinion, you're the best celebrity wrestler ever in the WWE.
You know from the cells to the bumps.
That's your opinion?
That's my opinion.
No, there's a fact.
Did you have the most painful moment in the ring?
Damien Priest hit me with the candlestick.
Because I always been listening since I was a kid, like, oh, the candlestick, that doesn't hurt.
That hurt.
Like, a lot.
That hurt a lot.
Then you know, i got so hyped watching you on your walkout for the san juan street fight.
Yeah, you know what makes chambea such a great song to walk out when you're a wrestler, what makes that song such a good entrance?
I don't know.
I think it's the very beginning, the melody the, the energy.
And it's crazy because since the first time that i dream with with, with b on wwe, i always knew that that was the perfect song.
When they went to Puerto Rico, I said, everyone in Puerto Rico knows this song.
And it's going to be like... Shaking the stadium.
Yes.
And it's one of the best moments of my life.
That entrance, I was like, wow.
It was a beautiful moment.
Yeah.
So in my humble opinion, you're the best celebrity wrestler ever in the WWE.
In my humble opinion, often shortened to Imho in text messages and online is a phrase people use before sharing their viewpoint.
Like Imho, The Last of Us is the best video game ever made.
Or Imho, Pineapple belongs on pizza.
You know, from the cells to the bumps.
That's your opinion?
That's my opinion.
Now we're getting into wrestling terminology.
From the cells to the bumps refers to a complete wrestling experience.
Cells refers to the hell in a cell match structure, a giant cage.
And bumps are the falls and impacts wrestlers take during matches.
Let's break down some pronunciation.
Notice how Benito says his Ts in words like hurt and lot.
Now there's nothing wrong with how he said this.
It's perfectly comprehensible, but it doesn't sound so natural.
In American English when a word ends in T, it usually should be a glottal T, like how Adam Sandler said hitting.
It's not plosive like Benito said it.
Let's compare.
Listen to how I say each of these words and how Benito says them hurt hurt hurt hurt, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot.
And then Benito mentions how he knew Chambéa was the song that he'd want to walk out to.
And it's crazy because since the first time that I dreamed with B on WWE.
Grammar note here.
Bad Bunny says that he dreamed with B on WWE, but the correct collocation is I dreamed of being on WWE.
The pattern is dream of plus a gerund.
I dreamed of becoming a singer.
She dreams of traveling the world.
They dreamed of opening their own restaurant.
Notice we use the preposition of, not with.
This is why it's important to learn word chunks, groups of words that go together, rather than translating individual words from your native language.
When they went to Puerto Rico I said everyone in Puerto Rico know this song and it's gonna be like shaking the stadium.
Shaking the stadium is a vivid way of describing an incredibly energetic crowd.
The audience is so hyped, so loud and jumping around so much that it literally feels like the entire building is vibrating.
You've done awesome today!
I hope that Benito has inspired you to be vulnerable and to courageously use your English to make your impact on the world.
But you're not done yet.
In fact, this is the most important part.
You'll test your English by watching all the clips again, without subtitles, to see if you understand better after all that studying.
And I know you're up for an extra challenge, so I'll also ask you some quiz questions along the way.
Let's go!
Before I say thanks to God, I'm gonna say If someone criticizes or disrespects you publicly, they're hating you, hating on you, not to hate on these days.
And I was thinking sometime we get .
I don't know how to say that in English.
The hate get more powerful with more hate.
The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love.
So please, we need to be different.
If we fight, we have to do it with love.
We don't hate them.
We love our people, we love our family, and that's the way to do it with love.
Don't forget that, please.
Thank you, but the first time that i saw him it was on uh, which is correct.
I saw him in the Lakers game.
I saw him on the Lakers game.
I saw him at the Lakers game.
Match the expression to its meaning.
I was a little tipsy, and I was, oh, my God, he's here.
Because I was waiting for that moment.
I've been in a lot of Lakers games.
I saw every celebrity, but never Adam Sandler.
So I was, he is here.
When he did the, like, eye contact with me and said, bro, I cried.
You want to politely share your point of view in a work message.
Which acronym should you use?
So, in my humble opinion, you're the best celebrity wrestler ever in the WWE.
You know, from the cells to the bumps.
That's your opinion?
That's my opinion.
No, that's a fact.
Did you have the most painful moment in the ring?
Damien Priest hit me with the candlestick.

That hurt a lot.
And then, you know, I got so hyped watching you on your walkout for the San Juan Street Fight.
You know, what makes Chambéa such a great song to walk out when you're a wrestler?
What makes that song such a good entrance song?
I don't know.
I think it's the very beginning, the melody, the energy.
Bad Bunny said I dream with B on WWE.
Write the correct version of this sentence.
I always knew that that was the perfect song.
When they went to Puerto Rico, I said, everyone in Puerto Rico knows this song.
And it's going to be like... Shaking the stadium.
Yes.
And it is one of the best moments of my life.
