Hey, what's good everybody.
My name is K. Sangha, and welcome to Radio Headspace on this wonderful Wednesday.
Today I'm continuing with my Mindful Moments segment.
With Mindful Moments, the idea is that we are fully present with what's happening, and open to learning something new.
With today's Mindful Moment, I'll be revisiting a concept of mindfulness known as Humor, and talking about how it showed up during my family trip to Los Angeles.
During this trip, we did all of the touristy things.
The Hollywood sign, the museums and some of the famous restaurants.
At the top of our touristy things to do list was Universal Studios.
From the moment we arrived, I was in awe.
It really looked and felt like a magical world.
Our first stop was the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
And if you know me, then you know I'm a big fan of Harry Potter.
Even standing in line for the roller coaster was amazing, because the line was wound throughout Hogwarts, the magical wizarding school.
I found myself yelling out spells to the Dementors and the Death Eaters, and reaching out trying to catch the snitch.
My daughters were laughing at me so hard, and I so didn't care.
I was having the time of my life.
It was soon after leaving Harry Potter Land that my mindful moment occurred.
We were walking through the park when all of a sudden I heard the voice.
The deep growling voice that I grew up with, Autobots transform.
It was Optimus Prime, the leader of the good transformers called Autobots.
Y 'all don't understand, I grew up watching the cartoon Transformers.
I had all the transformer toys.
I just love transformers.
And to see this live, life -sized replica of Optimus Prime was absolutely amazing.
All of my childhood instantaneously flashed before my eyes.
And then we went on the Transformers ride.
Double mindful moment.
It was the most fun I've had in a long time.
While there at Universal Studios, I set my intention from the very beginning to thoroughly experience the place moment by moment.
Not taking anything for granted, seeing what was to be seen, smelling what was to be smelled, and touching what we wanted to touch.
Well, as long as it was allowed, it made the trip flow so smoothly and it was super enjoyable.
I couldn't help but to think of the mindfulness concept of humor.
The idea of intentionally seeking out opportunities to laugh and to experience joy.
Now, for sure, there are moments in life that we do need to take seriously.
But the idea here is to remember to smile, remember to laugh and experience joy.
And we often have to do it on purpose with intention and deliberateness.
When riding the rides at Universal Studios, I purposely acted out the scenes on the rides.
Sure, my girls were embarrassed at first.
But I explained to them that I was intentionally enjoying myself.
I was intentionally being a big kid all over again.
They eventually got it and even joined in on the fun themselves.
So how can we all invite humor into our lives?
Well, you don't need to go to a theme park to do it.
You can tap into humor by looking at old photos and reminiscing about the good times, sharing a funny social media post with friends, or just reaching out and getting together with people that you know and love for a cup of coffee or a meal.
And remember, when you actively bring awareness to moments of joy, you often find them in abundance.
Alright, so stopping there for today, I encourage you to find those moments in your day to day to laugh and smile.
Find that intentional joy.
And just so you know, the app has an excellent meditation called Finding Time for Joy.
I encourage you to go and check it out.
