And now it's time for who smarted?
Hey, smarty pants, guess what?
I'm on vacation. Even though I get to travel a lot when I'm smarting, it's nice to take a break every once in a while and relax.
I've gone to the beach, played on a water slide.
And now I'm going to swim with a special ocean animal that's known for being smart and friendly.
Smarty pants, do you think I'm going to swim with A dolphin?
B, a great white shark or C, a beara kuda?
The answer is B, serious.
There is no way I'm going to swim with a great white shark.
And swimming with a beara kuda isn't either fun, nor advisable.
Why, of course, the answer is A.
Today, I'm getting to swim with a dolphin.
Right? But he's going to pull a fast one and stick me with a beara kuda or...
No, no. We wouldn't do that to you, trusty.
Today you're scheduled for a swim with my friend, Dali the dolphin.
Phew, but also, yay! Of course, when you're in the ocean, you don't really get to pick and choose the animals you're swimming with.
But today, I'm at it in Closed Lagoon, with my new dolphin trainer friend, Sandy.
Hi, Sandy! Hey, trusty.
Hey, smarty pants. Welcome.
Before you can swim with Dali the dolphin, I need you to put on this swim vest.
Ooh, that's snug. And some animal friendly sunscreen.
Whoops, Mr. Spot. There, I am so ready to swim with Dali the dolphin.
And I'm ready to swim with you too, trusty.
Well, did you just talk?
I did. In fact, I and most dolphins talk all the time.
I would say 99.999,999,999,999, percent of humans can't understand what we're saying.
Right, but 99.999,999,999,999,999, percent of humans aren't trusty narrators.
I have a lot of experience speaking to sea creatures and, well, all kinds of things on who smarted.
So, I guess it shouldn't really surprise me that I can talk to a dolphin, but hey, it's still fun every time.
Great. We can do a walk and talk.
Well, more like a cruise and smooth.
Sounds good, Dali. Of course.
Now that I realize we can understand one another, I kind of have a lot of questions I'd like to ask you.
Like, are there different types of dolphins?
How smart and friendly are dolphins, really?
Where do dolphins live?
And how big do they grow?
Sure, ask away. Looks like this just became a working vacation, smarty pants, because it's time for another whiff of science and history, un.
Who smarted? Who smarted?
Who smarted? Who smarted?
Who smarted? Who smart is it you?
Is it me? Is it science or history?
Listen up. Everyone, we're like smarting.
Lots of fun. I'm who smarted.

Yay! I'm so excited! In just a minute, I'm going to get to swim with Dolly the Dolphin, while both hurt and her trainer Sandy help us all learn more about dolphins.
Of course, when I think of dolphins, I think of a grey, smooth skin mammal with a dorsal fin similar to a shark's, only more rounded, a blowhole, and a flat tail fin or fluke like a whale, and a face that looks like it's always smiling.
Is that pretty much how all dolphins look?
The type of dolphin you just described is a bottle-nosed dolphin, like me, but there are other types of dolphins.
There are? Smarrypants, did you know that?
Sounds like some of you did, and some of you didn't.
Well, Smarrypants, let's see if you know how many kinds of dolphins there are.
Are there A over 10? B over 30?
Or C over 50 types of dolphins?
If you said B over 30 kinds of dolphins, you're right.
Wow, are they all about the same size?
Not even close. The smallest dolphins, called Maui dolphins, weigh less than 100 pounds.
They're only 4 feet long.
The biggest dolphins can weigh up to 4.5 tons and grow to be 32 feet long.
Whoa. Smarrypants, do you know what the biggest dolphin is called?
I'll give you a hint. It has the name of another sea creature in its name.
The largest dolphin is called an Orca, otherwise known as a killer whale.
How crazy is that? Killer whales are actually dolphins.
Orcas are also black and white, like a panda or a cow.
And Dolly is light gray with a white belly.
Do dolphins come in other colors?
Yes, and different patterns too.
And a lovely combination of dark and light gray, white and to our black.
But did you know there are dolphins in the Amazon River in South America that are pink?
Pink dolphins? Wow. I am learning all kinds of new things today.
Smarrypants, what are dolphins made of?
Bones like land animals or cartilage like sharks?
The answer is bones. But my bones are spun here than land animals bones.
This helps me stay light, so I don't sink.
A dolphin's skin is 10 times thicker than humans, and we have a blubbery layer to keep us warm in chilly ocean waters.
Speaking of ocean waters, where do dolphins tend to live?
Well, in the ocean, of course, because dolphins like saltwater.
Usually, we like to live near the equator because the water is always warm there.
Makes sense? I prefer warm water too.
But dolphins also need to go where the food is.
Makes sense? I go where the food is too.
Smarrypants, what do you think dolphins eat?
Is it A, fish? B, seaweed?
Or C, pizza? If you said C, pizza, you were probably thinking of me.
The correct answer is A, fish.
We love eating fish, so I would order a slice of pizza with anchovies and ask them to hold the pizza, please.
There are lots of fish to eat in the ocean, and we swallow most of our food without chewing.
Not me. Humans definitely need to chew our food.
Smarrypants, did you hear that?
What do you think that was?
A dolphin fart? A dolphin burp?
Or a dolphin breath? That was just me breathing out my blowhole.
As you probably know, dolphins are mammals that need to breathe air.
And a blowhole is a hole in the skin on the top of a dolphin's head that allows us to inhale air and exhale respiratory weights like carbon dioxide.
The water you see shooting out is just some water that slipped in during an exhale.
It's not coming from my lungs.
Doppins, just like humans, don't want water in our lungs.
Right. But wait, if you have a hole in your head, how do you keep water from getting in?
Simple. When we're underwater, we close our blowholes.
Nice. I always wondered about that.
Okay, moving on to a cuter subject.
What are baby dolphins called?
Are they calves, puppies, or dolphin lits?
If you said calves, you're right.
Oh. Yeah, just like baby cows.
How many dolphin calves are born at a time?
A mother dolphin usually has one calf at a time.
Dolphin calves stay safe by swimming close to their mommy.
Makes sense. When I was a kid, I always stayed close to my mommy in the ocean.
Mother dolphins and older calves teach baby dolphins how to hunt and play.
And dolphin calves drink their mother's milk for at least 18 months.
Even when we grow up, we like to live with other dolphin family and friends.
Aww, that's nice. Smarty pants, what is a group of dolphins called?
Is it A, a splash? B, a pod, or C, a school?
If you said a school, you're thinking of fish.
Hey, I'm always thinking of fish.
Is it snack time yet? I'm not, I'm not, I'm not.
You know I love a good snack, but the right answer is?
A pod. Your boss trusty, traveling in a large pod or super pod allows dolphins to catch and eat more fish.
Hmm, what do you think, Smarty pants?
On one hand, more dolphins means more hungry mouths, and possibly less food.
But something tells me that's not right.
We'll reveal the answer right after this quick break.

Now back to who's smarted.
OK, smarty pants, true or false.
By traveling in a big pod, dolphins are able to catch more food.
The answer is true. But how?
Wouldn't more mouths equal less food?
Not for dolphins. That's because we work together to find and catch food.
Sometimes we swim around in a circle real fast, causing an underwater whirlpool.
Any fish caught in it can't cut out, and we can just open our mouths and vacuum them up.
But, wow, you dolphins aren't playing.
Sure we are. Dolphins love to play.
We love jumping in the air, and when we're very happy, we jump for joy right out of the water.
We also enjoy surfing the waves, and we don't even need surfboards.
Dolphins also have their own language of clicks, squeaks, and whistle-like sounds that they use to communicate with each other.
They know their friends and can even recognize themselves in the mirror.
No wonder people love dolphins so much.
They're smart. Really and fun!
Very true. It seems people have always loved and been fascinated by dolphins.
Dolphins have appeared in stories told by humans since ancient times.
There are legends from around the world telling of dolphins rescuing ships lost at sea.
That's because dolphins are friendly to many creatures, including humans.
That's right. You won't find me swimming with any other fish or sea mammals.
Of course we have a lot of time to make new friends, because we don't really sleep.
Don't sleep? How is that possible?
Doesn't every living creature need sleep?
Not dolphins. Only half our brain goes to sleep at a time.
Sorry, wait. You can rest just half of your brain.
Each half of a dolphin brain is able to rest independently from the other, and each half can control crucial functions like breathing and staying alert for danger.
Dolphin brains are really big for our body size, and are actually bigger than human brains.
Aha, I see. So what else do dolphins do better than humans?
Swim, of course. Well duh.
Smarty pants, how much faster can a dolphin swim than the fastest human swimmer?
Is it A? Five times faster.
B, 10 times faster, or C, 15 times faster.
A dolphin like Dolly here can swim five times faster than the fastest human swimmer.
That's awesome. And for the record, I'm definitely not the fastest human swimmer.
No worries. We'll go nice and slow when we swim.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
For the record, I can drive a car better than any dolphin.
So you got me there trusty.
So when we swim together, do I hold onto your tail or your dorsal fin?
And what do your different fins do?
You'll hold onto Dolly's dorsal fin, the fin that's on her back.
That fin helps keep me from rolling over.
Whoa. And my tail helps propel me through the water.
I just flick it up and down and off I go.
I can also use it to look like I'm standing in the water.
Wow, you are too fun, Dolly.
Are all dolphins as playful and outgoing as Dolly?
Just like people, dolphins have different personalities, some are out going, while others are more shy.
And just like people, dolphins can let us know when they're sad, happy, or excited.
Was that excited? It was.
I'm excited to go swimming with you trusty.
Yeah, I guess we've done enough talking.
Now it's time to swim. Right after a quick snack.
He got anything other than fish in that pale?
