Is sleeping less than six hours a night the equivalent of being drunk?
Thanks for asking. We've all been there.
It's late, you're exhausted, but sleep just won't come.
You toss and turn, checking the clock every few minutes.
And the longer you're awake, the more anxious you feel about how little rest you're going to get.
Morning comes and even though you're barely functioning, you Drag yourself out of bed, grab a coffee and stumble through the day in a fog.
And it's not just your imagination.
When you sleep less than six hours a night, your brain starts to operate as if you are legally drunk.
What do researchers mean by drunk?
A study led by researchers at the University of Sydney, reported by Psychologies in April 2025, found that after two weeks of sleeping fewer than six hours a night, a person's cognitive performance drops to the same level as someone who's intoxicated.
Reaction times slow down, concentration falters and decision -making becomes much riskier.
Study leader Ann Williamson points out that people running on too little sleep struggle with tasks that require quick thinking, making this especially dangerous for professions like truck driving.
Why compare sleep deprivation to alcohol?
Because the effects are strikingly similar.
According to the same study, someone who consistently gets only six hours of sleep has reaction times close to a person with a blood alcohol concentration of one gram per litre – about four glasses of wine.
For context, most countries set the legal driving limit at 0 .5 grams per litre.
And just like someone who's been drinking, a sleep -deprived person often feels more capable than they really are.
Which only adds to the risk.
Psychologies also reminds us sleep is far from a passive process during the night the brain is hard at work sorting memories clearing out waste and strengthening everything you've learned during the day.
So how much sleep do we actually need?
It varies a little from person to person but according to the French health agency Insem a healthy night's sleep includes 3 to 6 cycles of deep and REM sleep, each lasting about 60 to 120 minutes.
Sleep experts recommend between 7 to 8 hours per night for most adults.
