Is living by the sea better for your health?
Thanks for asking. I don't know about you but I find that there's something about the seaside air which just always makes me relax and puts me in a better mode.
As it turns out that might be more than just my impression.
A study conducted by the University of Vienna and published in May 2022 established that living near the sea can have significant effects on health and life expectancy.
Now the idea is not exactly brand new.
Way back in the 17th century, English doctor Robert Whitty published a book entitled Scarborough Spa in which he recommended people take sea baths and walk along the coast to treat certain illnesses.
Getting back to the University of Vienna study that was published in journal Communications, Earth and Environment.
It saw researchers observe the health status of 15 ,000 people from 15 different countries, including Australia, Italy, France and the UK.
And its conclusion was clear.
Living by the sea is beneficial for health and well -being regardless of which country you live in or which social class you come from.
Wow, that's impressive.
Who would have thought?
Yes the results also impressed the researchers.
Sandra Geiger was the lead author of the study, and she's quoted in the official media releases saying, "...it is striking to see such consistent and clear patterns across all 15 countries.
We also now demonstrate that everybody seems to benefit from being near the seaside.
Not just the wealthy." The thing is, living by the sea has the power to get people out of their homes.
Those who live by the sea tend to engage in more physical activity.
They also suffer less from pollution.
Have more social interactions.
And above all, experience less stress.
Those are essential ingredients for a healthy lifestyle.
Health experts say that even if you don't live directly on the coast, visiting the seaside regularly has beneficial effects.
So those living within a mile of the coast are more likely to feel in very good or good health compared to those living more than 50 miles away, for example.
What about people like me who don't live close to the sea at all then?
Do I need to think about moving there?
Well, of course that's an option, but it may not be entirely practical for some people.
The University of Vienna study nevertheless recommends that city dwellers spend their holiday by the sea if possible, in order to reap some of the health benefits.
And researchers are also beginning to explore the effects of inland waters such as lakes and natural pools to see whether they're comparable to those of seas and oceans.
