Is bikini waxing harmful for your health?
Thanks for asking! Swimsuit season is here and many women will be making sure their body hair is groomed in good time before jetting off for a beach holiday.
And it's not just in summertime either.
According to a JAMA dermatology study of over 3 ,000 American women in 2016, 83 .8 % reported removing at least some of their pubic hair.
The most common hair removal methods are waxing, shaving and lasering.
Over half of the respondents cited hygiene reasons for doing so but in reality there may be associated health risks.
How did female pubic hair get to be out of fashion?
The trend is a result of current fashion which dictates that bodies are more attractive clean shaven than hairy.
Healthline .com suggests that this actually may have become the social norm due to pornography where hairlessness is common.
Pubic hair also has a bit of a reputation problem, it's a little wiry and unsightly and it traps sweat and bacteria like all body hair meaning it may have a stronger odor than other body parts.
What are the actual functions of pubic hair?
There are a number.
One of the most important is acting as a barrier to trap bacteria and debris.
Indeed it has been speculated that the risk of getting an STI is higher in women and men without pubic hair.
A 2016 study by doctors at the University of San Francisco found a correlation between frequent removal of pubic hair and the prevalence of certain infections which affect the skin like HPV and syphilis.
In theory it's possible for grooming to cause tiny skin tears making the body more vulnerable to bacteria.
But the study's authors admitted the findings were not conclusive and more recent studies have contradicted it.
So the jury is still out on that one, but it's probably best to avoid aggressive grooming shortly before having sex.
Are there any other risks?
Pubic hairs can become embedded when growing back, that means the hair grows underneath the skin which can lead to the formation of a small round bump with the surrounding skin becoming darker.
Pubic hairs can also play a role in sex because they're attached to nerve ends that's why removing them hurts.
Permanent hair removal with a laser can have a knock on effect as it destroys certain glands which also contribute to lubricating the vulva.
If you're still set on going hair free it's worth bearing in mind a few pointers, always use a clean razor and shave in the direction of hair growth.
And if you're going to a salon refuse to let your beauty therapist double dip a used spatula into the same wax part as that increases the risk of bacteria transmission.
