How can I improve my sense of direction?
Thanks for asking. Many of us feel completely disorientated at times and are afraid of getting lost, whether in the middle of the city, in the forest, when travelling or in the car.
In an age where GPS reigns supreme, many of us have become overly reliant on technology.
Yet there's a growing desire to hone our natural navigational skills and understand the brain's role in guiding us.
What we call our sense of direction is the result of a calculation by our brain based on data such as leg movement or walking speed and external information such as visual cues.
The brain therefore processes a huge amount of information via two main areas, the hippocampus, which is involved in the memory process and navigation, and the prefrontal cortex, which manages decision -making and planning.
Why are some people better at finding their way around?
It turns out our upbringing plays a significant role.
A study published in the journal Nature in March 2022 reveals that those raised in rural environments often have a keener sense of direction.
Urbanites, conversely, develop a more geometric sense due to city layouts.
Interestingly, residents of cities with intricate designs like London tend to navigate better than those with grid pattern metropolises like New York.
Another fact to be aware of is that this ability diminishes as we get older and the more it's used when we're young, the better it will be in adulthood.
And what about the age -old debate?
Do women have a poorer sense of direction?
According to Dr Elizabeth Spelk, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard University, societal stereotypes play a part.
There's a pervasive belief that women are less orientated, she explains.
But when we constantly are told something, it can become a self -fulfilling prophecy.
This misconception is also tied to gender inequalities in certain societies, where women's mobility is restricted, impacting their navigational experiences.
What can we do to improve our spatial orientation?
It boils down to mindfulness and practice.
By setting aside digital maps and relying on mental ones, we can significantly enhance our navigational abilities.
Embracing the journey, even when it means getting lost, is part of the learning process.
The more diverse our experience is, the better our spatial skills become.
