On IELTS, you need these four words to level up your score to a band nine.

Aubrey, what do you think is the biggest change that most of our listeners will face in the near future?
Definitely some changes coming up for them.
Absolutely.
And the transition from preparing for an exam to adjusting to life after IELTS, right?
That's a big change, whether you will be attending school in English immigrating, starting a job in English or just getting used to life not having to prepare for an exam.
It's going to be a big change.
Oh my gosh.
And on the exam itself, there is a good chance that our listeners will be asked about upcoming changes right.
Yeah, absolutely.
You might be asked about your plans for the future.
If you are good at dealing with change.
There are a lot of questions on IELTS that could require you to talk about changes coming up for you or how good you are at handling change.
Okay, so this is definitely an important area to think about and prepare for when we're getting ready for IELTS.
Absolutely.
So we're going to teach you some high-scoring phrases today verbs that are less common, as well as some other phrases.

And Aubrey, today's episode, we're going to get a little sneak peek of what's in the course.
Where does today's content come from?
Exactly.
These high scoring phrases are from module 11 of this course.
Module 11 is called Dealing with Change.
And so these phrases are from that, but we're going to give you these in the context of IELTS.
You know, example sentences that you could use if you are asked about change in your own life.
Awesome.
I am excited to get into it, Aubrey.
What's our first one that we need to know for IELTS?
So number one is the noun uncertainty.
This is the state of being unsure or not knowing what will happen.
For example, you might say graduating from high school brought a lot of uncertainty about what I would do, but I have a solid plan now.
Yeah, and our listeners, if they've already immigrated abroad, they know about this, right?
Because there's nothing more uncertain than moving abroad, right?
Exactly, right?
I experienced a lot of uncertainty when I moved abroad.
There are so many answers that this could be used in.
And then even just within your own country, moving to a new city always comes with some uncertainty.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
And the band six way of saying this is, I wasn't sure what would happen, right?
This word is up-leveled, right?
I don't hear students say it this way.
It's a little bit more of a formal phrasing to say I experienced uncertainty or this came with uncertainty.
That's a really important distinction, the difference.
And we should call that out more often on the show Aubrey the differences between how a band six student would say it and how a band seven eight, nine student would say it.
There's a real difference.
Right?
Absolutely.
Yes.
You want to uplevel your vocabulary skills.
And it's not just using words that you've never heard before.
It's more about using words that are less common for IELTS students to use and structures, the phrasing being either a little bit elevated or a little bit less common.
Yes.
And another good one is adapt.
This is a verb.
This means to adjust or change in response to new conditions, which is what we have to do when we move abroad.
Right, exactly.
So, for example, I'll have to adapt quickly to living in a new country when I start my master's degree in New Zealand.
So, if you're asked about future plans, about changes that are coming up for you, if you are moving, if you are going to go to school, if you're immigrating, this is a great verb to talk about how the adjustments you'll have to make.
I'll have to adapt.
Yes, I love it.
Or after I moved to Australia, I'll need to adapt to a new culture.
So just a good high level word to have in your back pocket, right?
To stand out from the crowd.
Agility is the next one, which I really like this one.
It can apply across the physical world and also the business world.
Absolutely.
This is a noun that means the ability to move or think or respond quickly and flexibly.
So, for example, you might say I feel like I've shown great agility in balancing work, school and family with everything that is changing in my life.
You may be even sometimes IELTS answers will require you to talk about studying for IELTS.
And you could say this, right?
I've shown great agility balancing my personal life even though I'm spending hours and hours studying for IELTS.
Very nice.
Or I know that I'll need a lot of agility once I start my new job in the UK.
So here we're saying as a professional, you're going to need to build a pivot quickly and have those skills that are quick and just able to adapt quickly.
Exactly.
This might not seem like that long and complicated of a word, but it's band nine.
I don't know if I've ever heard a student use it.
Add it to your vocabulary notebook, practice using it because it's quite flexible.
You could use it for a lot of different answers.
And Aubrey, I mean, you read a lot of student essays, you listen to a lot of speaking samples.
And so you have a good database of what students are and are not using.
And that's really useful for us here on the show because we know like what are rare band nine words.
Exactly.
Exactly.
There's so much vocabulary that we know is you know, available online in practice sample answers.
We're hearing it a lot, but there are other words like today's that are very rare for students and will impress the examiner.
Give them that chance to give you a higher vocabulary score.
Yes, I love it.
And this one is the most impressive, I think.
What is it, Aubrey?
It is paradigm shift. which is a noun, it is spelled differently than it sounds.
So if you're using it in an essay, pay attention to the spelling of paradigm, but it is a fundamental and often dramatic change in the way something is understood or approached.
So for many of you, as you study for IELTS, you are making these paradigm shifts in order to change your schooling, change your job, immigrate to a new country.
This will likely be applicable to your answers.
Yeah, I always think of the phrase your world turns upside down when I think of paradigm shift, right?
Everything just turns upside down and changes.
Yeah, and that's a great bonus.
That's another way you could say this.
My world turned upside down when...
Or you might say, moving to a new country will be a big paradigm shift as I start working and adapting to a new culture.
It's going to be a huge life-changing event.
And just a hot spelling tip, that G is silent.
There is a G in there, believe it or not.
It's P-A-R-A-D-I-G-M.
It is spelled very strangely.
There should not be a G in there.
I don't understand why there's a G, but there is.
English is such a strange language.
Here's another example.
Switching to remote work created a paradigm shift in how I thought about my career and my daily routine.
Okay.
Lots of ways we could use this on the test.
The point is we want to use it.
And you have exciting changes on the horizon, right?
We want you to be ready to adapt, to be agile.
Show that agility as you embrace everything coming your way.

IELTS is not the end.
It's the beginning of you reaching your goals of this new adventure.
