Hello and welcome to our series of episodes on idioms. Maria and I have specially selected
different idioms to talk about lots of different areas in your life, to bring up your level
of English to a high standard.
First of all, I'm going to give an example, paraphrasing the idiom. Rory will guess the idiom
and then we will give you the meaning, the origin and more examples.
I know what idioms we are going to be talking about, but I haven't seen the sentences
and I have no idea what order they are going to be in.
So the company did everything well and they paid all their workers during the lockdown.
The lockdown.
I remember.
So they didn't try to save money, they paid everybody.
So they...
I want to say they went the extra mile because that sounds like they've done something
good as well.
And the important bit is like they didn't want to cheat, they didn't want to save any money,
they didn't want to do anything illegal, so they did everything well, paid the workers
during the lockdown.
Oh, they cut no corners, I see.
Yeah, yeah, this is a difficult one, Delisma.
So cut no corners and this is about something negative.
So this means like to save money or to save time by not including certain parts or by
not doing certain actions so that the result is not as good as it could be.
And usually we use it about companies.
And this one is actually related to the idea of businesses because it used to be people
who made tiles for roof's wood, cut corners in order to do something faster, but it also
would reduce the quality, so by cutting corners it would save money, but it would also mean
the quality is worse.
And like companies in a crisis and you say okay, there was no corners cut, so no corners
were cut.
And we can change this idiom, right?
So the company cut no corners in the past, no corners were cut, what else can we say?
There was no corner cutting, it can be a process to, yeah, Troy, Rory, could you give us
another example?
Well, you could apply this to any business context really.
So businesses frequently cut corners in order to save money, but it ruins their reputations.
So if we think about some discount stores, they cut corners in terms of the quality of
their staff training and their store layout.
So everything is cheaper, but as a result, the quality of the service is lower, so they
were cutting corners.
Sweet.
Thank you very much for listening.
We'll come back to you in our next episode.
Bye.
