How can I take part in Giving Tuesday?
Thanks for asking! Giving Tuesday is a worldwide initiative which encourages people to do good.
The movement was created in the United States in 2012 and has since spread to have a presence in 75 different countries as of 2021.
This year, like every year, Giving Tuesday is celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and Black Friday, meaning it falls on the 29th of November.
Is it all about donating to charity then?
Well, that does play a big part.
A lot of companies and charities match donations to encourage people to give.
For example, this year, Meta will match up to 7 million dollars in donations made through its platform, as it has done in previous years.
PayPal does something similar and indeed matches donations to qualified non -profits throughout the year for up to $2 ,500 per person.
Giving Tuesday has also gained support from philanthropic organisations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies and the Ford Foundation.
I'm a bit strapped for cash this year, what can I do to help?
It's not all about giving money, especially in the context of the ongoing cost of living crisis, not everyone can afford to reach into their pocket and make a big cash donation.
The aim is to give in any way possible.
It could be giving blood, donating clothes to charity, or helping distribute food to the needy for example.
You could also volunteer your time or skills to a good cause.
It's important to be proud of what you're doing too.
You can tell your friends and family about your plans to spread the good vibes.
Who knows, maybe they'll want to join in or come up with their own giving idea and posting about your actions on social media with the Giving Tuesday hashtag as a no -brainer.
It's all about sharing that enthusiasm for giving.
If you're a bit of a leader, you could organise a fundraising event or donation drive.
And why not write to your local MP to ask for support?

What about business owners?
Businesses can also play an important role in inspiring their customers and employees to do good.
A lot of companies run corporate social responsibility schemes all year long, and Giving Tuesday isn't a good opportunity to highlight the benefits being generated.
It can also be a more local initiative.
For example, back in 2017, 24 New York restaurants donated a portion of their revenue to local charities.
The list of participating restaurants was shared in advance so that customers could choose to dine at an establishment that was involved.
