How can I return unwanted gifts?
Thanks for asking. It's great to be remembered by friends, colleagues and families at Christmas.
But despite people's best intentions, they don't always get you what you want.
So now the festive season is over and the wrapping is off, it might be time to take some of those gifts back rather than let them gather dust in a cupboard.
What are your rights?
If you bought something in -store or online and it's faulty, then by law, you can get a full refund if you return it within 30 days.
After 30 days, the stores oblige to provide a repair or a replacement.
However, legally speaking, you do not have the right to return an item because you don't like it.
That said, most shops have their own generous returns policy so it's worth finding out what their terms are before you try and return an unwanted item and expect your money back if they only offer exchanges or store credit.
A receipt or a gift receipt is usually necessary for this so you might have to ask whoever gave you the gift if they still have it in order to return it.
They might also ask for the original card to process the refund.
What is a gift receipt?
This is a small receipt that does not show you the price of an item but makes it easier for people to return an unwanted present.
If you offer someone a gift and are not sure they'll like it, be sure to ask for one and give it to them with your present.
It will make an eventual future return or exchange much easier.
When should you return your items by?
As soon as possible, but most places offer 28 days in which to return or exchange gifts, though this might be longer over Christmas.
For online shopping, you have 14 days in which to change your mind, even if there's nothing wrong with the item.
If you send back purchases bought online, you'll often have to cover the costs.
Also, consider tracking your parcel.
Gareth Shaw, the witch head of money, says...
If you're paying for the return, you might want to consider tracked postage for peace of mind, and if the retailer hasn't provided a free tracked pre -paid label, we recommend you get proof of postage so you can show that you returned your goods.
What might cause a return to be refused?
You do need to make sure that anything you wish to return is in perfect condition and still has any labels or tags attached.
If goods are damaged or if they've been customised, then it's unlikely they will take them back.
What can you do if you can't return it?
There are lots of options.
You could re -gift it to someone who you think would enjoy it, sell it online, or donate it to a charity shop.
Alternatively, you could give it away by listing it on sites like FreeCycle.
