Hi there, it's Dora, and you are now tuned into Radio Headspace.
I'm so glad you're here.
So a couple years ago, I was going through a really turbulent time in my work life.
Deadlines were piling up, meetings felt nonstop and I was trying so hard to hold it all together, to appear calm, capable and in control.
But my body was telling a different story.
I'd catch myself in the mirror and notice my shoulders were practically at my ears.
Tense, tight, braced for impact.
Like I was waiting for something to go wrong.
In the wild part, I didn't even realize it at first.
The tension had become so normal, I thought it was just me.
It turns out I'm not alone in that.
There's a saying that goes, The shoulders carry what the heart doesn't speak.
And that makes sense because stress isn't just in our minds.
It lives in our bodies.
When we're under pressure, our nervous system responds.
We tense up, breathe shallow, and our muscles, especially in the neck and shoulders, hold on tight.
Over time, that physical stress becomes familiar, even mistaken for a personality.
But here's what I've learned.
Softening physically creates space emotionally.
And when we become aware of what our bodies are holding, we start the process of release.
I'll never forget this one yoga class I took during that chaotic time.
I almost didn't go.
I was tired, behind on emails, and overwhelmed.
But something in me said, just go.
You need this.
The studio was dimly lit. warm, and smelled like lavender and eucalyptus.
I rolled up my mat in the back corner and just sat there, just trying to breathe.
About halfway through the class, the teacher guided us into a gentle backbend, supported fish pose.
I laid on my bolster with my chest open, arms outstretched, and palms up.
And my shoulders slowly began to melt down.
And it was in that moment and that stillness that something shifted.
I started crying.
And not the quiet, single tear kind of cry.
I'm talking full release.
It felt like my body had been holding a conversation that my mind had been too busy to hear.
It wasn't crying because I was sad.
I was crying because I finally felt safe enough to let go.
Now that yoga class didn't fix all my problems, but it gave me a window into myself.
A moment of deep embodied truth.
It reminded me that awareness lives in the body, that healing isn't always about doing more.
Sometimes it's about feeling what's already there.
So if you're noticing tension in your body, especially in your shoulders, you're not alone.
Honestly, I'm right here with you.
And like I'm realizing, you might just be holding more than you realize.
So here's a few gentle ways to come back to yourself and begin to work with the tension in your body.
Number one is to pause and notice your posture.
Are your shoulders creeping towards your ears?
Number two is to use your breath.
Try a long exhale to signal safety to your body.
And number three is to ask yourself, what am I carrying right now that's not mine?
Or what have I been holding without realizing it?
We don't always get to choose the stresses that come our way, but we can choose how we care for ourselves through them.
In short, you don't have to carry it all.
You don't have to harden to survive.
Let your softness be a form of strength.
And let your body be a compass, not just a container.
And remember, even in the busiest seasons of your life, you're allowed and you can come back to yourself.
Thank you so much for being here with me.
I'll see you tomorrow.
