How to choose the best detergent.
Thanks for asking.
In the days of yore, clothes were scrubbed with soap, brushes and sheer elbow grease.
But today, laundry detergents have revolutionised the way we clean our garments.
These modern marvels remove stains without requiring Herculean effort.
But navigating the overwhelming array of choices in the detergent aisle can be overwhelming.
There's so much choice.
How do you sort through it all?
The French consumer magazine 60 Millions de Consumateurs carried out an extensive study in February 2020 to answer just this question.
They scrutinised 25 different washing powder brands.
Their evaluation criteria included chemical risk, environmental impact, health considerations, washing efficiency and colour preservation.
What were the results?
When it comes to efficiency, capsules steal the show.
These little powerhouses outperform liquid detergents and maintain the whiteness of your clothes.
That's not all.
They also are kinder to your health.
Capsules contain fewer allergic substances and controversial preservatives.
Some liquid detergents sneakily harbour preservatives from the thiazoline family.
These molecules can trigger allergens.
Capsules, however, steer clear of these allergic elements.
Liquid detergents, on the other hand, can harbour up to 25 different allergens per bottle.
Be aware of brands like Dash and Purcell as they pack quite a punch in the allergen department.
Opt for brands like Eco Planet if you want a gentler, cleaner wash.
Keep in mind though, that while capsules are convenient and precise no need to measure out how much you need it is important to use them properly.
Never toss the capsules into the dispenser drawer or they won't dissolve there.
Instead, place them directly into the drum before adding clothes.
But they can be quite pricey.
Should you make your own detergent to avoid chemicals?
Yes, you can.
That way, you're sure to know the list of all the ingredients.
And you'll see, it's pretty simple.
You'll need 50 grams of Marseille soap, one liter of water, a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda, 10 drops of essential oil and a container.
To make it simply grate the Marseille soap, Heat the water, add the soap shavings and then gently stir.
Leave to cool and add the bicarbonate of soda.
Add the essential oils and pour into a jug.
And that's all there is to it.
No allergens or harmful products in your detergent.
And best of all, it's economical.
There you have it.
