How can I beat my work addiction?
Thanks for asking.
Being a grafter or hustler is often portrayed in a positive light when it comes to the world of work, but there are a host of negative consequences that can arise when a person becomes a workaholic.
The term was invented by American psychologist Wayne Oates back in 1971.
Oates said workaholics had an uncontrollable need to work incessantly and called it an addiction.
It's a real mental health condition and, like with other addictions, it manifests as the inability to stop doing something.
So it basically means working really long hours, does it?
That is a common trait of workaholics, but working long hours and being a workaholic don't always go hand in hand.
It's more problematic when a person can't switch off from work mode, even outside their contracted hours.
If you're constantly thinking about work and checking emails or Slack notifications when at home, that might be a warning sign.
Harvard Business Review published an article in 2018 explaining the important distinction.
It was based on a study of 3500 workers at a financial consulting firm and looked to find a connection between workaholism and biomarkers like waste measurement triglycerides, blood pressure and cholesterol, which are used to assess the risk of a person getting cardiovascular diseases or diabetes.
The workers were surveyed on their possible workaholic tendencies and then went for a health screening.
Interestingly the research found no connection between working long hours and having health issues.
On the other hand it did identify a pattern with workaholics.
They had more health complaints, even if they didn't work long hours, and were more likely to have trouble sleeping or feel emotionally exhausted.
Who is most likely to become a workaholic?
It's pretty common to feel like you have to be successful in your career in order to achieve social status.
That pressure can have a role to play in causing people to become workaholics if they want to get ahead at all costs.
What's more, achieving some level of job success often leads to taking on a greater workload and dealing with more pressure.
It can be a vicious circle.
Some people may have certain risk factors making them more likely to work compulsively, like perfectionism, narcissism or a history of addictive behaviour.
There are a number of tests used to identify work addiction which can be found relatively easily online.
They generally include work-related statements and users have to rate themselves on a scale and add up their total score.
Some of the most notable tests are Bryan Robinson's work addiction risk test and the Bergen work addiction scale.
While they're useful as a starting point, bear in mind they're not a substitute for professional diagnosis.
Once you recognise there's a problem, you can take steps like setting boundaries and having an open conversation with your boss to address it.
If you feel like you're not able to beat your work addiction alone, You may wish to seek professional help through a trained counsellor or therapist.
The good news is that work addiction can be managed.
With the right treatment you can restore a healthy work-life balance.
There you have it.
