Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning, this is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is about how to be optimistic about next year, the method, get to work, and the good things you want to see happen.
So, you may have seen a cartoon running around social media.
Two dogs are chatting.
One dog asks the other why he is optimistic about the new year and what he thinks it will bring.
I think it will bring flowers, the dog replies.
Why? The other wants to know.
Because I am planting flowers, he says.
And indeed, the cartoon shows him working in the dirt, with a watering can, and a little box of seeds beside him.
So there is wisdom in this cartoon.
Seeds we plant usually grow and bloom.
Not all of the time, of course, but most of the time.
So if you want flowers, plant seeds.
This is true, literally.
If you would like some tulips in April, mid -fall is a good time to plant those bulbs.
It is also true metaphorically.
What are your hopes for next year?
A new job? A more functional home?
A stronger body? Closer connections with friends?
I am sure you can come up with all sorts of seeds or bulbs that would lead to these outcomes.
If you would like a new job, you can start strengthening your network and figuring out which organizations you might like to work for, and brushing up on any skills you think will be helpful.
If you want your home to be more attractive and functional, you might identify the major problem areas.
Then you can look at places like Pinterest or Instagram or magazines for inspiration, or talk to a designer or organizer.
You can tackle one area.
And once you spiff up that space, you might have the momentum to work through a timeline for other areas too.
If you want a stronger body, consider scheduling a couple of sessions with a trainer to learn some basics, and get the weights or bands to do those exercises at home, or maybe find an app or online video source for strength training guidance.
Once you've learned some exercises, decide on a weekly routine, and plant the seeds for a stronger you.
Not every seed you plant will sprout.
It happens. You might put a lot of effort into building a local friendship, and then that person needs to move for family reasons.
But the surest way to be optimistic about what is ahead is to plant seeds of what you hope will grow, and then nourish them.
So as you consider what you want in the new year, don't just hope.
It's time to start digging in the dirt.
In the meantime, this is Laura.
Thanks for listening, and here's to making the most of our time.
