Today we're going to cover how to answer one of the most awkward interview questions.
Why do you want to leave your current job or why did you leave your previous job?
This question is one of the trickiest to answer, because you don't want to make them think that you're a job hopper, but you also want to show interest in the new opportunity.
In today's video, we'll cover four keys to a successful answer and give you some examples.
So first off, let's start with some tips.
There are four parts to a good answer to why do you want to leave your current job.
First, be honest but diplomatic.
Second, focus on the positive.
Third, highlight growth opportunities at the new company.
And fourth, keep your answer concise.
For example, I've been a sales associate in a few different industries for about seven years.
Although it's been fun, I've been feeling a bit of stagnation for some time now, as the company structure doesn't really encourage internal promotions.
I feel I'm ready for more responsibility and for a level up in my career.
I know the ins and outs of selling and now I'd like to work on the strategic side of things.
I'd love to develop and implement sales strategies and create a tight-knit sales team.
And, considering you're looking for someone with this profile, I think I'd be a great fit for the team.
Now, before you say, but wait, I shouldn't have to lie about why I'm leaving my company.
You're right, you shouldn't.
But you also don't want to sound extremely negative.
For example, if you left for a cultural reason, you don't wanna say I left my previous job because my boss was a total maniac.
Even if that's true, it's just gonna make you sound bad.
Instead, you can say something like I've been wanting a more independent style of work and, even though I've brought it up several times at my current company, we just have a different style of working.
In these two answers, you're saying the same thing, but the second one is much more professional.
Similarly, if you're looking for more money, you could say something about how you're looking to advance your career and looking for more chances of success.
Then you can mention a few ways that this company is going to help you accomplish that, such as a specific bonus structure, a change in the market or the possibility to level up quickly.
The key with this question is to stay positive, so you don't raise any red flags, but also to be as honest as you can.
You don't want to sugarcoat your answer or lie and end up in the same position at this new company.
