Squiz Kids! It's your daily news fix.
Fun, free, fresh. So, it's the school holidays.
And that means no homework or classrooms or teachers for a couple of weeks.
But what to do to pass the time?
Welcome to the inaugural Squiz Kids Holiday Movie Guide, the Winter Edition.
Woohoo! You're quick as a flash, run through all the kids' movies out there these holidays to distract you and entertain you.
I'm Christy Kijerina.
And I'm Bryce Corbett.
And yes, that's right, Christy, if you're looking for an easy guide to the new releases at the cinema this school holiday guaranteed to bust any home from school boredom, then look no further.
Woohoo! In the next 10 minutes, we're going to run you through which new movies will be gracing a silver screen near you and whether they're any good or not.
Bryce, should we hop straight in?
Let's do it. And the first movie out of the gates these winter school holidays is a remake of the Disney classic Lilo and Stitch, the funny story of a lonely Hawaiian girl who makes friends with a naughty alien who comes to Earth to cause all sorts of chaos, but ends up mending her broken family along the way.
now we know that none of you will be around 23 years ago when the original Lilo and Stitch came out but you take it from me this clever remake is every bit as funny let's have a quick listen we have apprehended a dangerous experiment where is he?
he escaped he's trying to find the police cruisers he took the red one what hideous planet is caught in your crosshairs shooting stars I wish for a friend like a best friend what the hell that sounds like a whole lot of out of this world fun Now, speaking of out of this world, another movie hitting the cinemas these school holidays features a bunch of super cute, super blue little people who have been entertaining kids for decades.
Have a listen to this little snippet from the new movie trailer and see if you can guess which film I'm talking about.
Shh! Let's go smurf that wizard up.
Oh, yeah. Charge! Get ready.
Race for impact! For an adventure.
It's wrong. That will blew you away.
Come on! What the Smurf?
Pull out of your little Smurf nose!
We're here to save everything.
Goodbye Smurfs, forever!
Did you guess Smurfs?
Then you would be right!
Yes, those lovable blue creatures are at it again and this time they're on a rescue mission in the real world to save Papa Smurf after he's kidnapped by Gargamel and his evil little brother, Razamel, with the help of some very cute new friends.
Ah, yes, you'd be talking about snooter boots, wouldn't you, Christy?
And yes, they are ridiculously cute.
The thing I'm most excited about for this movie is that it features new music from Rihanna, Smurfette, and also from DJ Khaled.
And I reckon that'll give the trolls a run for their money in the thumping soundtrack department.
Oh, I can just see you in the aisles of your local cinema, popcorn in hand, dancing up a storm, Bryce.
You know it. Moving on to our next holiday movie, it's one of my favourite ever children's books, given the full film treatment.
Have a listen and see if you know which adorable book character I'm talking about.
Meet the Flying Doctors.
And about the Grit.
And Zog. And Princess Pearl.
Thank you Doctor Princess Pearl!
My uncle's house? Princesses can't be doctors, silly girl!
Caesar! The King is extremely sick.
Do your best to find the cure and do be very quick.
I loved the Zog books The keen little dragon who just wants to win a gold star The first of the books where he learns to breathe fire, roar and fly with the help of a little girl is one I remember reading to my kids over and over again So cool that it's now been made into a movie Yep, and this one is just beautiful It's called Zog and the Flying Doctors And it follows the adventures of Zog, Princess Pearl and Gadabout as a trio of flying doctors.
Flitting about the place, helping to treat a unicorn and a mermaid and a sneezy lion.
Before Dr. Princess Pearl's uncle, the king, locks her up before he falls sick himself.
Can Princess Pearl find the cure in time?
I'm heating up the popcorn as we speak for that one.
Moving on and the next movie in our winter movie guide is Elio A new Pixar film about a little boy who just wants to belong But has trouble making friends So much so that all he wants is to be beamed up into space by aliens And then he is Let's take a listen Okay, come and get me you okay i'm trying to get abducted by aliens helios skipping school i don't know if this is boundary testing or sleep regression which one of these is you i don't know but i think that one is you my son are you prepared to become the greatest war machine in the universe now this is a Pixar film so the same people who created
movies like Inside Out and the Toy Story franchise so you know it's going to be good Elio finds himself beamed up to the Communiverse which is like an interplanetary United Nations with representatives from galaxies far and wide and they think he is the ambassador for Earth oh cool I love the sound of that one how do they keep coming up with all these clever ideas?
Oh, I know, right? Amazing.
On the subject of clever ideas, here's a movie that I have been hanging out for and I can hardly believe it's finally here in cinemas.
Have a listen and see if you can work out what movie I'm talking about.
Shh! I never traveled.
These beasts are a threat to all of our lands.
It's time, Hiccup. I have to kill you.
I will because I'm a Viking.
Hear that? I'm a Viking!
it's okay i won't hurt you did you hear the name hiccup or maybe you heard the word viking yep i'm gonna go out on a fantasy to see Meats Viking Legend Lim here and say it's How to Train Your Dragon.
Yes, that's exactly what it is.
And I've seen the trailer and I could not be more excited to see this one.
All your favourite characters from the animated film are back, but this time it's a live action movie, meaning Hiccup and friends are played by actual humans with some awesome CGI special effects used to bring Toothless, the dragon, and all his dragon friends to life.
Yep, and the special effects on this one are going to blow you away.
The flying scenes alone are going to be worth the price of admission.
So, what's left, Bryce?
How much more cinematic awesomeness can we possibly squeeze into one school holiday?
Well, I'm glad you asked, Christy, because the final movie in our Squizz Kids School Holiday Movie Guide Winter Edition is the latest in a franchise that just keeps getting better, in my humble opinion.
Whoa, slow down there, cowboy.
What's a franchise?
Franchise? A franchise?
Well, in the world of films, it's a fancy word to describe a movie that has multiple sequels.
So think Toy Story, which is up to Toy Story 4 by now, or the Madagascar movies, which has also gotten up to Madagascar 4 as well.
Oh my goodness. Okay, so what popular franchise are we talking about here then?
Let's let the movie trailer do the talking, and I bet everyone listening will be able to guess.
Shh. dr henry loomis this is zora bennett our mission specialist sorry what mission this would be a medical breakthrough that could save countless lives it comes from the largest dinosaurs on the planet oh my god fortunately for us all these species exist in one isolated place can you be ready tomorrow i can guarantee your safety it?
I mean, more or less.
More or less? Hmm, I'm pretty sure I know what it is, but can I get a snippet more, please?
Yeah, alright, then try this one for size.
We need DNA from the three biggest dinosaurs.
Do we have to get a sample from an egg?
I suppose we could try and get it from the parent, but they're a flying carnival the size of an F -16.
Maybe we should make it quick.
I had it before, I just wanted to listen again.
It's Jurassic World, isn't it?
You ever do? Or Jurassic World Rebirth, to be exact.
This is the seventh in the Jurassic franchise.
And like all the other ones, this one is full of all the dinosaur drama that we've come to know and love from all the Jurassic films that have come before it.
That's right. This time a team of scientists returned to the island that was the home of the original Jurassic Park and their mission is to extract DNA from dinosaurs that still live there to get their hands on genetic material that can, of course, save humankind.
Of course, what else?
I'll be T -rexing my way to the nearest multiplex for that one, Christy.
I'd like to see that.
You can bet a raptor on it, in fact.
Well, as they say in the movies, that's a wrap on our Squiz Kids School Holiday Movie Guide Winter Edition.
Or should I say that's a rap tour?
Oh, man, that dad joke alarm just follows me everywhere.
It sure does. Thanks for tuning in to our winter movie guide.
