What's the happiest country in the world?
Thanks for asking! Just last week, the latest edition of the annual World Happiness Report was released.
The report is compiled by the Gallup World Poll in cooperation with the University of Oxford and the U .N.'s Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
Now, if you've ever read up on the World Happiness Report or other similar rankings, it will come as no surprise to you that European nations dominated this year's ranking, and the Nordic countries in particular.
Who took number one spot then?
For the seventh year running, Finland took the title of the happiest country on the planet.
Right on its heels were Denmark and Iceland, holding second and third spot respectively.
Aside from the continued dominance of Scandinavian countries, expert observers noted a few other interesting trends.
For one, the world's most populous nations are notably absent from the top of the standings.
Only Australia in tenth has a population of over 20 million inhabitants and the happiest countries aren't necessarily economic powerhouses either.
Just look at the example of the states the world's largest economy which this year ranked only 23rd marking the first time in the world happiness report's 12 -year history that the country didn't feature in the top 20 meanwhile the UK featured 20th three positions behind neighboring country Ireland believe it or not it's all down subjective life evaluations.
The Gallup World Poll uses a type of wellbeing assessment called the Cantrill Ladder which requires participants to rate their lives on a scale from zero to ten, with ten being the pinnacle of happiness.
Each year about a hundred thousand people participate with researchers then analyzing the average responses and factoring in data from the past three years.
According to Euronews, interdisciplinary experts from the Fields of economics, psychology and sociology are then called in to crunch the data and make evaluations based on six key variables.
Those variables are GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity and corruption levels.
What is the world's unhappiest nation, then?
That unfortunate title goes to Afghanistan, languishing in the rankings 143rd spot.
Since the Taliban's resurgence in 2020 the country has been mired in a humanitarian crisis.
Amnesty International has reported on a deepening poverty crisis exacerbated by increasing restrictions on women's rights, freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
The bottom of the list is primarily comprised of middle eastern and African nations like Lebanon, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and Congo.
What other trends did the report shed light on?
For the first time, the ranking delves into happiness levels across age groups, revealing the stark reality that the world's youth are more discontent than ever before.
That shift was most glaring in North America, New Zealand and Australia.
While traditionally younger generations were happier than their elders, the happiness scale now tips higher for those over 60 than for those under 30.
Potential explanations for this change are housing woes, income disparities, and mounting fears about war and climate change.
There you have it. Now you know what the happiest country in the world is.
