My name is Jack and I'm here with my co -host Sochal.
And today we are doing, sorry, we are in the Grammar Zone.
And today's Grammar Zone is actually three, there are three words, there, there, and there.
And these are homophones and the meanings are different, but the sounds are all the same.
so this this gets confusing I think for for language learners social because you know they hear the word there and they just think it has one meaning um and one spelling but they don't realize there are actually three different spellings and three different meanings of the word there and so I thought
maybe you could start us off with like the first one t -h -e -r -e there what does that mean and can you give me an example there is a word that refers to a physical place like yep that person is over there or where can I buy some socks oh they're over there in aisle four or something like that.
And the way that my elementary school teacher taught us this, I think can be really helpful.
There is spelled T -H -E -R -E.
So it has the word here, H -E -R -E, in it.
Here or there. So I think that really helps.
It's like talking about a place.
Is he here or is he there?
So I think that can help you memorize it and what it means or what context it's used in that's a great kind of uh mnemonic device you know to remember um maybe it's not a mnemonic device but uh a kind of trick a little trick yeah yeah yeah um awesome okay um our second one is there t -h -e -i -r so what's
the definition and an example there is it refers to um it belonging to someone else or to a group of people like um whose cup is this it's theirs meaning it's that group of people's cup or um like their house something like their house yeah it's like it's possessive basically well it can be yeah and um
yeah their house their school and it's T -H -E -I -R.
So it's different than the others.
Yeah. And I forgot, I got one more example here just from the internet here.
The students forgot to take their books home.
And whose books? Their books.
And here's a trick.
And this is a trick that I just learned.
Their has the word air in it, H -E -I -R, suggesting ownership by a group so if you are an heir to something like an heir to the throne that means it is your the throne is yours so h -e -i -r and then you just add t and you get there i don't know it's not quite as uh easy as it works it's like uh he's the heir
to the throne or they're the heir to the throne who's the heir to the throne no I messed that up that's all right I know what you're saying though I know what you mean no I get it yeah so it just means it's just possessive essentially and yeah heir as in they are the heir to the throne it's their throne
it's their throne right our last one is there t -h -e -y apostrophe r -e and this one's kind of easy if you think about it i think you know i think it is i will throw in a caveat so their t -h -e -y apostrophe r -e means they are and a lot of times in english we use an apostrophe to join two words together
in this case we're joining to everyone who loves the taste of tradition come enjoy a classic wisconsin fish fry at culver's I'm Genesis from Culver's in Claremont, Florida.

A plus R is there, but I think where it can get confusing for people is that we also use apostrophes to um give possession yeah possession so it's like jack's aunt is going to be jack apostrophe s but in this case that's not what we're doing we're joining two words kind of like i'm i apostrophe m i'm
i plus am is i'm there is they plus are there so it's because they use a pronoun and whenever you'd use a pronoun with an apostrophe you're using two words together you're combining two words together but if it's a proper noun with a apostrophe then it could be possession or it could also be two words
together so I think that's it's very confusing I think sometimes yeah it definitely can be what would be an example of using their jack uh they're going to the movies tonight yeah they're going to the movies tonight they are going to the movies tonight exactly that's the test all you have to do is just
say they are if you if it's they are then you know that the spelling is t -h -e -y apostrophe r -e like that's it you know it just means they right that's a great way to phrase it jack if you can fit they are into the sentence and it still makes sense then you know that that's the correct there to use versus
if you're saying whose movie is it it's their movie it's not going to be it's they are a movie right right the students forgot to take they are books home you know yeah no yeah that doesn't make sense or if you say for if you replace it with t -h -e -r -e like where are the socks and um no sorry what i
was trying to say is they they're over there they are over there correct but it wouldn't be they are over they are they are over they are yeah they are over they are so that's what yeah so that's where you can kind of it takes some practice but i think if you use these tricks um then it'll become easier
to place them yeah i would just separate it and just use there if you if you really have a problem with their there and there just never use they they apostrophe r e just always write it long form they are or say it out loud just say they are and then you only have to remember two you know yeah and then
of those two you know that there means there has the word here in it for it's over there and so then there is just the other one t -h -e -i -r is just the other there.
So that's really all you have to think about.
Exactly. All right, listeners, hopefully that wasn't too confusing.
If you want us to rehash this in a short form, let us know because it did.
It does get a little hard because we're speaking and I think it's just hard to see it outside of his written form.
It does get a little confusing.
Hopefully when Jack and I move to doing YouTube videos, we can pop these like up on the screen and that will just make it so much simpler.
But I will put a transcript of this so you can read through the transcript as you listen as well.
Yeah, and I think that'll make it easier.
