Hello, everybody! Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
today's expression is a little bit long.
Listen carefully. To give someone the benefit of the doubt.
So, one more time, to give someone the benefit, B -E -N -E -F -I -T of The Doubt.
D -O -U -B -T. The B is silent.
There's no B sound.
Don't say doubt, but To say doubt to give someone the benefit of the doubt Now this is a long expression and I'm gonna give you a really easy definition the idea is somebody gave you an Excuse, you know, they're late or they didn't do their homework or they cannot meet you something they give you an excuse like I have no money my mother is sick my car is broken something like that right now and depending on the friend you might not believe them you might suspect that they're just lying but when we use the expression to give someone the benefit of the doubt.
Even though it sounds like they could be lying.
Anyway, you're going to believe them and accept their excuse.
Okay. So let me give you a real quick example.
The real estate guy that I had in Boulder city.
Was I mean he was just useless.
I would set an appointment with him 9 a .m. And He wouldn't come and I would call and he wouldn't answer his phone Finally at 10 30.
I get a hold of him.
I say hey, Mike. What's up?
Where are you? We're supposed to be together here at 9 o 'clock.
Oh my god. I'm so sorry my daughter was sick, and I went to the hospital and my phone battery died I'm going there now I'll be there in 10 minutes Now I don't believe Mike I'm quite certain he's lying because it's not the first time But well, maybe his daughter was sick and that's a tragedy.
So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt Does this make sense?
I hope so. Here's another example in the dialogue.
Where's Mark? He's late.
He said he got a flat tire.
And you believed in him?
Oh, let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
Yeah, it's tough, you know, flat tire, car broke down, dog ate my homework, grandmother's sick.
You know, whatever, people have a lot of kind of silly, stupid excuses, is but but maybe sometimes they're real.
It's possible. I've had that situation where I gave an excuse it sounded really stupid but it was real.
Yeah so giving someone the benefit of the doubt is not such a bad thing.
But every time well that's a problem.
Check out dialogue a couple more times and together let's master English where's mark he's late oh he said he got a flat tire and you believed him oh let's give him the benefit of the doubt where's mark he's late oh he said he got a flat tire and you believed him oh let's give him the benefit of the doubt
