Why are Gen Z revenge quitting their jobs?
Thanks for asking.
Have you ever been so fed up at work that you wanted to not only quit your job, but also make a statement while doing so?
Well, that's a workplace trend that's really been on the rise in 2025.
So much so that it's been given its own name.
Revenge quitting.
Fortune magazine says it's taken over from quiet quitting, which we talked about on Do You Really Know in the past.
Back in January, a software finder survey of over 1000 American employees found that 17 had already revenge quit a job, while 28 expected to see it happen at their workplace this year.
Does revenge quitting mean storming out and slamming the door then?
Well, it's not necessarily that dramatic, but revenge quitters definitely have a desire to impact their employer's operations in a negative way.
Posting on TikTok in February 2025, entrepreneur and content creator Ben Askins gave some examples of what revenge quitting can look like in concrete terms.
Quitting mid-shift so companies are forced to shut early, quitting at the busiest time of season.
So people are shorthanded or even just being particularly vocal in regards to why you are leaving.
So you can see that when in the past a polite, friendly resignation might have been preferred, these days many people want to get a message across.
Choosing to do that, then.
It seems to be a generational thing.
Gen Z are roughly between the ages of 18 and 28.
And, unlike previous generations, they don't want to sacrifice their mental health, work-life balance or personal values for a paycheck.
More and more employees who feel unappreciated, burned out or disconnected from their company's values and work culture are deciding to quit suddenly and loudly.
The Software Finder survey I mentioned earlier explained that low salary or a lack of raises was the most common frustration among employees.
But revenge quitting isn't only down to dissatisfaction with pay.
Dr Ryan Sherman is Chief Science Officer at Hogan Assessments.
Writing for Training Journal in September 2025.
He explained that it's also about broken promises, toxic leadership and a chronic lack of genuine engagement.
So why is it Gen Z who are leading this trend?
Well, as I touched on earlier, Gen Z tend to place work-life balance pretty high up in their list of priorities.
According to a Deloitte study, only 6 of Gen Z members say their primary career goal is to reach a leadership position.
You could say that Gen Z simply isn't willing to suffer in silence if they feel disengaged at work or that their employer is taking advantage of their time and energy.
There you have it.
