Hello, hello, welcome to Radio Headspace and to Friday.
Yes, we made it through the week.
It's Eve here with you.
I know I've touched on some pretty heavy topics this week, but I share some of these topics with you because that's life.
Life is messy and complicated and pretty tough at times.
And I read a quote on Instagram that Tiny Buddha had posted.
It was by an unknown author, but it really resonated with me, and it said, What do you do for a living?
Me? My best. I do my best.
I'm smiling because that's exactly right.
We're all just doing our best.
I think it also helps to take the pressure off a little, when we realise we're all in this together.
As it's Friday, let's just take a moment to pause and to check in.
That's what I love about my mindfulness practice, that you can really plug in at any moment.
So wherever you are right now, take a couple of slower, deeper breaths.
Breathing in through the nose, and out through the mouth.
As you inhale, it's as if you're breathing in a sense of space and ease.
And with each exhale, letting go of any tightness or tension, breathing out any stress you may be feeling, softening the jaw, relaxing the shoulders.
Thanks for doing that with me.
As we go throughout our day, we don't often pay attention to our bodies.
We might ignore tension or tightness that is present.
So that was an opportunity to invite a sense of balance and ease into the mind and body, and you can do it at any point in your day.
So I wanted to end the week on a topic that I love, and that's music.
For me, music is a deep invitation to connect with our senses, to feel connected with others, to dance, to tap into memories, and to connect with those who are no longer here.
Growing up, music was always a part of my childhood.
I remember long car journeys listening to Dolly Parton, Bob Marley, Tina Turner, and Whitney Houston, a few of my faves, and actually quite a lot of classical music as my dad especially loved it.
He once told me that Maria Callas, a very well -known opera singer in the 50s and 60s, was the most beautiful voice he'd ever heard.
I, on the other hand, might use my voice in the work that I do, but I cannot sing.
Completely tone -deaf.
Music takes you on a journey.
I think for me there are so many parallels with mindfulness when it comes to music.
To create and write music you have to be totally focused on the notes, the beats, the rhythm, the words, and how it all works together.
You have to be open to new ideas and sounds.
When listening to music, you can be in a state of complete flow.
It's a completely sensory experience, encompassing the whole mind and body.
And there's also research coming out that listening to a piece of music that moves you can help to improve your mood and wellbeing.
If I think back to some of the happiest times in my life, it's been with friends dancing and listening to our favourite music.
Dancing is also really good for the mind and body.
When we dance, the brain releases hormones like endorphins and serotonin, which are those good feel hormones.
It can help to reduce stress by moving your body and focusing on the sound of the music.
Essentially redirecting your attention to something that brings you joy.
Music has also been really healing for me as I've navigated the past few years, which have felt so heavy and sad.
It's helped me to feel connected to my parents.
I'll listen to songs we loved or ones that remind me of them.
Sometimes it's equal parts joy as it is sadness, but you can hold both.
Both can be present.
Recently I've been listening to music at a frequency of 246 Hz, as it's believed that it can help to calm the nervous system.
I've not found any research as such on this, but I can say from experience that it does.
So as we head into the weekend, perhaps take some time to connect with some music that brings you joy that might help you feel connected to someone.
Hey, go dancing. Be in the moment with the sound of the music.
Share connections with others.
I promise you won't regret it.
And yeah, dance like no one is watching.
Thank you so much for listening.
It's been a pleasure to be back on the show with you.
And I look forward to seeing you back here next week.
Have a lovely weekend.
How do you feel when you switch to GEICO and save on your car insurance?
It's like going to work on one Thursday morning and thinking to yourself, just one more day until Friday.
But then somebody in the elevator says, happy Friday.
Then you check your phone quickly and discover today is actually Friday.
So yes, happy Friday, random stranger in the elevator.
Happy Friday, indeed.
Yep, switching and saving with GEICO feels just like that.
