Welcome to a new episode of English Vocabulary Booster.
My name is Lara and I'm a SALSA certified English teacher.
Learning new vocabulary usually takes a long time, but we'll do it in a way that's easy, quick and efficient.
In every episode, we'll learn how to use five new English words or expressions, so that you too can start speaking like a native.
So let's get learning.
This week's topic is friendship.
Let's listen to the story.
This is a photo of Tommy, my best friend.
Tommy and I bonded over music.
We both wanted to be rock stars.
It was the 80s, and even though we were both around 30 years old at the time, we had never stopped dreaming.
We met at a rock bar and we hit it off right away.
We had so many things in common.
We liked the same bands, had the same sense of humor.
You could say we became instant best friends.
We hung out a lot and realized that we got on like a house on fire.
So soon after, we decided to rent an apartment together and start a band together.
The Rocky Coaster.
We spent all of our time together and became very close.
I don't think anybody knows me like he does.
He knows me inside out.
Sure, we went through some tough moments, but we stuck together through thick and thin.
And now, even though we're both 70, we keep playing and rocking like when we were younger.
Okay, so we're back.
That was my terrible, terrible attempt at making the voice of a 70-year-old man.
Yeah, that didn't work out great.
But let's look at the words, which is the important thing at the end of the day.
So word number one, bond over something.
Tommy and I bonded over music.
If two people bond over something, do they start a friendship or end it?
If you bond over something, that's because you're starting a friendship.
And if two people bond over music, for example, do they start a friendship because they have similar or different interests?
Well, if you bond over something, for example music, with someone, it's because you have similar interests.
You can bond over, I don't know, movies or you can bond over your own love for dogs.
So what other things can people bond over?
Oh, no, I already answered this question.
Like I said, you can bond over fashion.
I don't know.
It really depends.
I don't really bond over interests.
Well, maybe a little bit like movies and music.
But mostly I think when I find a new friend they become friends with me because I like their sense of humor.
Word number two, hit it off.
We hit it off right away.
If you hit it off with someone, do you like each other or dislike each other at first sight?
If you hit it off with someone, that means you like each other immediately.
Again, as soon as you meet them, you just like each other.
Think of your best friend.
Did you hit it off right away or it became good friends later?
My best friend.
Yes, we definitely hit it off right away.
We both found each other very funny.
So, yeah.
Word number three, get on like a house on fire.
We got on like a house on fire.
If you get on like a house on fire, do you have a really bad or a really good relationship?
Now, normally students have a hard time understanding this expression, because a house on fire does not sound like a good thing.
But if you get on like a house on fire, that means you have a really good relationship.
Can you think of someone with whom you get on like a house on fire?
Um, I think most of my friends, like all of my friends, we get on like a house on fire.
Um, otherwise it wouldn't be my friends, I guess.
I don't have any like you know those friends that yeah you kind of see you hang out with, but you don't love being with them.
No, all of my friends, we get on like a house on fire and I love spending time with them.
Word number four.
Know somebody inside out.
He knows me inside out.
If you know somebody inside out.
Ugh, gross.
No, just kidding.
Do you know them very well or not very well?
Well, inside and out.
What else is there to know about a person?
Nothing.
You know them very well.
You know them perfectly.
Who do you think knows you inside out?
I think...
I think all of my friends.
Well, no, not all of my friends.
I think my sister knows me inside out.
Probably my ex and I think my boyfriend.
Because we've spent so much time together and because I'm constantly talking to them and telling them how I feel.
And you know, if I need to talk to someone, I call them.
They know me inside out.
Word number five, stick together through thick and thin.
We stuck together through thick and thin.
If two people stick together through thick and thin oh boy, this is a tongue twister.
Do they support each other when things go well?
If you stick together through thick and thin, yes, you support each other when things go well.
And what about when there is a problem?
Do they still support each other or not?
Yes.
If you stick together through thick and thin, you always support each other.
It doesn't matter if things are going well or if things are going poorly.
You're always there for each other.
Can you think of someone in your life who's always been there for you?
And do you stick together through thick and thin?
Yes.
In this case, it's Marcos, my boyfriend.
We have been together for about a year and he's always been there for me, like right from the start.
We have the craziest story of how we met one day.
Maybe I'm going to tell you.
And yeah, and even like everything that we've been through this year, which has been quite a lot, we always stuck together through thick and thin.
And that is it for today.
