OK, let's get on with this mini -episode.
In this episode, I am going to teach you an interesting and useful word.
The word is no nonsense.
No nonsense. That's spelled n -o -hyphen.
N -o -n S -e -n -s -e. No nonsense.
Before I can talk about this word and what it means, I need to talk about a different word, and that word is nonsense.
N -O -N -S -E -N -S -E, nonsense.
What does nonsense mean?
Nonsense means a lot of related things.
Nonsense means things like foolishness, or silly, or unimportant, or meaningless talk, or actions.
Nonsense is a usually negative word that means things that don't make sense or things that are not important or things that are somehow not serious.
No nonsense is an adjective and I think it is usually a positive word.
If If we describe a person as no -nonsense, we are saying that person is serious, sensible, and practical.
We are saying that person has no patience for nonsense.
That person has no patience for meaningless or unserious or unimportant things.
That person does not like foolish behavior.
I think we are also saying that the person does not like wasting time with things that don't matter.
That person is business -like.
A no -nonsense person wants to do his or her work properly and does not have any time for things that might be described as foolish or silly or unimportant.
I think we are usually saying this as a compliment.
This might be something we admire about somebody.
Nonsense is usually negative, and so no nonsense is usually positive.
A no -nonsense person is serious and sensible and practical and takes a job, or takes work, or takes something seriously, and does not appreciate people who waste time, or people who do silly, unimportant things.
That is no nonsense.
A useful and interesting word that I think you should know.
This is the end of episode 405 of Everybody ESL.
