Welcome to a new episode of English Vocabulary Booster.
My name is Lara and I'm a SALSA-certified English teacher.
Learning new vocabulary usually takes a long time, but we'll do it in a way that's easy, quick and efficient.
In every episode, we'll learn how to use five new English words or expressions, so that you too can start speaking like a native.
So let's get learning!
Hello, hello you guys.
I hope you're doing well.
I hope you're in a great mood today.
Today we're going to talk about dreams.
So let's listen to today's story.
Hi, my name is Paul.
I'm a life coach and a motivator.
And if you're listening to this podcast, that means you're ready to change.
Maybe you've been stuck in the same routine for years.
Yeah.
And I'm here to tell you that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.
I bet you want more from life, don't you?
Yeah, I do.
Well then, stop daydreaming and start doing what you need to do in order to get where you want to get.
Think about that.
What's on your bucket list?
Do you want to climb a mountain?
Do you want to travel the world?
If you're stuck in a job that you hate, living a life you feel wasn't meant for you, do something about it.
This is the sign you were waiting for.
I'm here to tell you that it's time to make your dreams come true.
But you gotta take action now.
You gotta start chasing your dreams now.
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
Now.
Become the person you want to be.
Become the person you would be jealous of.
Become the- Yes!
You're right, Paul.
I'll do it.
Honey?
Honey?
What?
I've decided I'm finally going to run a marathon.
A marathon?
But you don't even jog.
I gotta dream big, Mariel.
In fact, I'm gonna start training right away.
Alright, well, don't forget your keys.
Got him.
I'll just... Is it... Is it raining?
Man, it's a bit chilly today.
Actually, now that I think about it, there's a new episode of Fast and the Restless coming out at 3 pm.
I really wanted to watch that.
Maybe I'll just start training tomorrow.
Well, that was me pretty much every Monday, when I decide that I'm going to change my life for good, that I'm going to start doing all these great things like running, like eating healthy.
Yeah, well, and then I always find an excuse or two to not start that day.
And then guess what?
You gotta wait for the following week.
So, yeah.
Anyway, let's begin with expression number one.
Daydream.
Then stop daydreaming.
If you are daydreaming, are you sleeping or not?
No, I know that it does contain the word dream, but no, when you are daydreaming, you are not sleeping.
You are very much awake.
And if you are daydreaming, are you thinking about something pleasant or something unpleasant?
If you are daydreaming, you are usually thinking about something pleasant.
Something.
Maybe you're fantasizing about the future or something that could be happening at the moment.
Maybe you're thinking about your crush, imagining the two of you kissing each other.
These kinds of things.
Pleasant things, definitely.
Are you paying attention to what's happening around you while you are daydreaming?
No, when you are daydreaming, you are so distracted.
You're so focused on these thoughts that you're having.
Do you often daydream?
I think I used to daydream a lot more than I do now because I'm so busy with so many practical things.
I really don't have that much time to daydream, but it's something that I love to do.
I find it very comforting.
So whenever I can, I like to go for a walk and I like to listen to some music and then daydream.
It's one of my favorite things to do.
Unfortunately, when I'm really stressed out, I can't do it because I start thinking about as I'm walking, I start thinking about all these things that I have to do and it's not relaxing at all.
But there are times when I can daydream and I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, because at the end of the day you're escaping reality.
But I love doing it.
Expression number two, bucket list.
What's on your bucket list?
What's on a bucket list?
A list of items that you need to buy from the grocery store or a list of things that you want to do before you die.
On your bucket list, you're going to have a list of things that you want to do before you die.
Have you ever made a bucket list?
I have tried to make a bucket list.
First of all, when you say bucket list, it can be either something physical you can have a physical bucket list
So you can write down on a piece of paper or, I don't know, on your computer or something, all the things that you want to do before you die.
Or it can just be something that you have, you know planned, but you haven't written anything down.
Either way, if you have a list of things that you want to do before you die, you can call that a bucket list and i think um, i love the idea if it was that simple.
So, you know you, you put a bunch of things on a piece of paper and then boom, you start doing them.
But a lot of times, a lot of these things take a long time to accomplish.
So I think it can be a little disheartening when you have, like I don't know, buy a house or get married, and then you don't have the money to buy a house or you cannot find the right person to get married to.
Then, you know, a bucket list may not be a great idea.
It can be, it can do more harm than good.
But all in all, I do like the idea of a bucket list.
What are some of the things on your bucket list?
I think one of the main things that's on my bucket list.
Well, traveling in general is always on my bucket list.
But I think recently I fell in love with the idea of traveling in a van.
And I think that is definitely one of the things that I would add to my bucket list because I would love to do it.
I would love to spend a year or two traveling in a van.
And yeah, I'd love to do that before I die.
Expression number three, dream big.
If you dream big, does that mean you want simple things from life or extraordinary things?
If you dream big, that means that you want extraordinary things to happen to you.
And what are some examples of dreaming big?
Well, I mentioned a few things, like you know running for president, or maybe becoming a millionaire or, I don't know, becoming a movie star.
Those are examples of, you know, one in a million.
I don't know.
I'm just like throwing statistics out there.
I have no idea.
I'm really bad at math.
But you know, it's just like very few people accomplish those things.
So dreaming big means having literally like big dreams.
Having these great plans for yourself.
Do you tend to dream big?
And is that a good thing or not?
Um, yeah, I definitely think that I dream big.
Even when I was a child, I used to dream big.
I mean, when I was younger, I wanted to be a Hollywood star.
I was sure I was going to become an actress.
But then things changed.
I personally don't even think I would like to be an actress.
I like what I do.
I really do.
Now, obviously, I still think I dream big because I...
My biggest dream right now is to make this a job.
Somehow be able to turn this into my full-time job.
This is my dream.
And I think I am dreaming big right now because, you know, I know it's not easy.
I know it takes a lot of work.
I know there's a lot of competition out there.
But I still like to dream big and to think that you know, who knows, one day I might be able to do this.
And is dreaming big a good thing or a bad thing?
I think it's a great thing.
I think we should all dream big and have great plans for ourselves and really go for it.
Obviously, you know, we got to be responsible.
But yes, I think you shouldn't be afraid to dream big.
Expression number four, dreams come true.
I'm here to tell you that it's time to make your dreams come true.
If your dreams come true, do they become a reality or not?
Yes, if your dreams come true, as Cinderella used to say, they become a reality, meaning you had a dream and then it became real.
It was not a dream anymore.
It was real life.
Have any of your dreams come true?
I think I'm always like looking for the next thing out of life.
But I think so many of my dreams have come true already.
Living in another country, having the job that I have at the moment that allows me to travel and, at the same time, teach you guys.
Like most of my dreams have already come true if I think about it.
Also, I don't want to be too cheesy, but three years ago I met my boyfriend and I don't think I've ever been this happy in a relationship.
And that was always a dream of mine to just be in a nice and healthy relationship with a guy that I loved.
So yeah, that's another dream that's come true already.
So I really can't complain.
I like to complain a lot.
My boyfriend knows that, but I really shouldn't be complaining.
Expression number five, chase your dreams.
You gotta start chasing your dreams now.
If you are chasing your dreams, are you working in order to make them come true or are you ignoring them?
If you are chasing your dreams, you're working in order to make them come true.
You are doing something, you're being proactive in order to turn them into a reality.
So if you dream of, for example, becoming a professional photographer, what would you do in order to start chasing that dream?
Well, if you wanted to chase that dream of becoming a professional photographer, I think you would have to maybe create an Instagram profile.
You would have to make connections.
You would have to hire models and, you know, work on several projects.
These are all the things that you would be doing if you were chasing that dream.
What dreams are you chasing at the moment?
Well, I've already mentioned that.
One of my biggest dreams at the moment would be to turn this into my full-time job, to be able to make a living off of this.
That would bring me a lot of joy.
So right now, this is the dream i'm chasing, and actually i have to thank you guys for even making me believe that one day this could happen because, um yeah otherwise, if it were for you, i would not be dreaming about this at all.
And that is it for today.
