Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace.
So it's Friday, we're at the end of the week and I feel like there's been a bit of a theme
this week maybe.
And some of it's revolved around all of us living together and needing to get along
with one another and I think as human beings it's very difficult not to sometimes be critical,
judgmental, not only of ourselves, but also of those around us.
And it's a real art in allowing other people to be as they are.
And it reminded me thinking about this of my wedding day actually, to my lovely wife,
Lucinda.
And it was happening in a quite a sort of stressful time.
I think weddings sort of invariably are quite stressful but it was the same week as giving
a TED talk.
So I was trying on the one hand to learn a TED talk and at the same time trying to think
what I was going to say at the wedding sort of as a groom's speech.
No, I don't about you when you're giving a talk but personally I don't like to prepare
the details in advance and I don't like using notes.
So just like to have a sense of direction where I'm kind of going.
But the TED talk was really different.
It was they wanted 10 minutes of very precise wording that had been seen before and I'm
maybe they didn't trust me, I don't know.
But it meant learning it in sort of fine detail and it got to a point where because it was
happening within a few days of the wedding, I thought there was a real danger of not remembering
what I wanted to say.
So I got it down to a nutshell and you know what was the most important thing and as I
thought about it I thought the most important thing and the thing that I wanted to share
with her on that day and with our friends and family on that day was that she allowed
me to be who I am as I am without wanting or trying to change me in any way at all and
I'd never experienced that in my life before.
I think it's a really rare thing where we truly allow others to be as they are.
It doesn't mean we always necessarily kind of like what each other kind of does.
We all do things and we all say things which will inevitably annoy other people.
That's just part being human beings and likewise other people will do that for us.
We all have preferences but I think sometimes we can secretly harbor a desire and a wish
and a hope maybe we're even waiting for someone else to change, maybe we're trying to make
somebody else change but actually allowing people to be who they are.
I'm not sure there's a more precious gift we can give.
So whether it's today as you head into your Friday or whether it's you head into your weekend
maybe think less about what can you do and maybe it's more about what we don't do,
maybe not judging, maybe not criticizing, maybe not trying to change but just allowing
those that we love to be who they are and as they are in each and every moment.
Have a good weekend.
I'll look forward to seeing you back here next week.
