Thanks for asking. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing was only created in the late twentieth century, but it's since established itself as a popular and increasingly used form of therapy.
EMDR is especially recommended for children and adults dealing with trauma from physical or psychological violence such as sexual abuse.
EMDR was discovered relatively recently in 1987, but that doesn't mean it's an alternative treatment.
It's a clinically proven approach. According to charity PTSD UK, one study showed up to 90 % of single trauma victims no longer have PTSD after only three 90 minute sessions.
The technique allows people to process psychological trauma by moving their eyes in quick, side -to -side motions combined with tactile or auditory stimulation.
As per the NHS website, it involves recalling the traumatic incident in detail while making eye movements, usually by following the movement of your therapist's finger.
Other methods may include the therapist tapping their finger or playing sounds.
Each set of exercises lasts about a minute.
These exercises work on the brain to release negative emotions.
the process helps people let go of painful memories tied to traumatic events providing relief.
– So how was it discovered?
It was actually somewhat accidental.
In 1987, American psychologist, Francine Shapiro was walking in a park when she realized that she was able to rid herself of upsetting thoughts by moving her eyes rapidly back and forth.
What's more when the troubling thoughts returned, they were less disturbing.
Shapiro would go on to test this technique on others, and then on trauma survivors.
Two years later in 1989, she published findings from conducting EMDR sessions with 22 subjects in the Journal of Traumatic Stress.
The subjects were all victims of traumatic incidents concerning the Vietnam War, childhood sexual molestation, sexual or physical assault or emotional abuse.
And according to Shapiro's groundbreaking study, a single session of the EMD procedure successfully desensitized the subject's traumatic memories and dramatically altered their cognitive assessments of the situation, effects that were maintained through the three -month follow -up check.
Now, if you think EMDR could be suitable for you, the NHS website explains that if you've been suffering from trauma you'll need to go through a detailed assessment before beginning treatment.
That could be with a GP or mental health specialist. There you have it.
