Easy English expression rehashed. Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English. Saturday in the park.
I think it was the 4th of July. Do you know that song?
It's a song by Chicago. It is Saturday.
It's not the 4th of July, though. It's middle of August.
We have such a good expression today. Well, it's actually, there are three words that people get confused because they're kind of like the same.
So this podcast is very informative, especially if you are or have been on a summer vacation.
Enjoy. Let's go back in time. today is a very useful lesson people get confused with these words trip T-R-I-P, travel, T-R-A-V-E-L, and journey, J-O-U-R-N-E-Y.
Do not be confused. It's simple.
The rule is simple. Travel, T-R-A-V-E-L, is a verb.
I travel. I travel. When did you travel?
Travel to go someplace. How do you travel to work?
We never say that, but it's possible to say that.
Do you like to travel? Ah, do you like to go places?
Do you like to travel by plane? When you go places, do you like to go via an airplane?
So travel is a verb. Now, sometimes we say his travels with an S as a noun.
And that... is referring to the trips or the journeys that he has taken.
So travels with an S as a noun can be either trips or journeys in the plural form.
So what's the difference between a trip or a journey, or a trip and a journey.
A trip is something very short. So a trip, a business trip, For four hours.
A trip. I took a trip to the nearby city for a business meeting and came back.
So I left at 10 o'clock in the morning. I came back at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
It was a business trip. That's a trip. Now, a trip can also be to another country.
I had a business trip to France. For two weeks.
The idea of a trip is it's temporary. It's not long.
It's for a short period of time. When you take a vacation, many people take trips.
For me, when I take a vacation, I usually stay home.
I like to rest, sleep, read, cook. That's my idea of a vacation.
Same with my mom and dad. But my sister, when she takes a vacation, she likes to take a trip, sometimes to another state, sometimes to another country.
What's a journey? A journey, something very long, a long voyage by sea or a trek.
That would be a long trip across the desert with camels and knights on end and end.
Just camping, camping, camping. It takes you a month.
It takes you a year. a journey is to explore maybe to explore another land maybe to explore inside yourself So there are many people who take a journey to India to find their inner spirit, to find out their inner selves, the Beatles.
They all did that Me, I've never taken a journey I've taken many trips Actually I don't really like to travel that much but if I have to travel, I definitely prefer driving.
Does this make sense? I hope so. Let's check out a dialogue.
Do you like to travel? Not really. I prefer short trips.
So you've never been overseas? Never. I haven't even seen the ocean.
Is that you? Have you seen the ocean? Do you know what?
My mom and dad have never seen the ocean.
Isn't that amazing? My dad's old. My dad's like, I don't know. thousand years old.
I can't remember. He's really old. My mom too.
And they've never seen the ocean. They've been to many states in the United States, but they've never seen the ocean.
I could have been just like them, but...
Because I was in the U.S. Army, they sent me overseas and I've seen the ocean.
I've seen the Atlantic Ocean. I've seen the Pacific Ocean, so I've seen two oceans.
I feel kinda lucky. What about you? Do you like to travel?
Have you seen the ocean? How many trips have you been on?
Have you ever been on a journey? Oh if so I do want to hear about it.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Do you like to travel? Not really. I prefer short trips.
So you've never been overseas? Never. I haven't even seen the ocean.
