Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Coach Shane here.
How are you doing?
A couple of days ago, we studied happy holidays again in the United States.
We could actually kind of start Thanksgiving and then Christmas and New Year's as kind of a holiday period.
But more typically in the United States it's going to be the end of December into January when we say happy holidays.
But you could start in November.
And, like I said, China right now is about to experience their big holiday season, with National Week and, of course, the Mid-Autumn Festival.
That's a big event, not just in China, but in other Asian countries, too.
But one thing that every holiday has...
It's not good.
And it's what we're going to learn in EQ podcast number 234.
Let's go back in time.
Do you like spending the holidays with your family or would you rather be alone?
Spend it alone.
Well, this year is lucky for me.
I got to spend Christmas and my birthday with my family.
It has been over 20 years.
So very special Christmas.
And yeah, so I'm very happy.
And today's expression is related to something that happened to me on Christmas Day.
It was great.
The expression is to foot the bill.
To foot the bill.
F-O-O-T.
To foot.
What does it mean to foot?
The bill.
B-I-L-L.
What is a bill?
Well, if you go to a restaurant, you get a bill.
You have to pay for the food that you ordered and ate.
Do you understand?
At the end of the month, you get the telephone bill.
It tells you how much you have to pay because you used your telephone.
If you go to a hotel, you have to pay the hotel bill.
You have to pay them for sleeping in their hotel and, I don't know, taking a shower and using their shampoo.
So the bill.
So to foot the bill...
Does that mean to kick the bill because it's too expensive?
That's a good guess.
No, to foot the bill actually means to pay the bill.
So what about you?
If you and your friend go to a restaurant, who foots the bill?
Do you pay for the bill?
Do you pay for dinner?
Or does your friend?
Or do you split the bill?
What about you and your girlfriend or you and your boyfriend?
Who foots the bill?
If a man and a woman are on a date, who should foot the bill?
Should the man foot the bill or should the woman foot the bill?
Should the man foot the bill this week and the woman the next week?
At an expensive restaurant, who should foot the bill?
On the wedding anniversary, if the couple goes out to dinner, who should foot the bill?
The husband or the wife?
These are very dangerous questions.
I think the simple answer and the safe answer is the man should foot the bill.
But you know, we got some feminists out there who say, why?
Why should the man foot the bill?
And I agree.
I agree.
Hey, if my wife, if my girlfriend, if my date wants to foot the bill, go ahead.
Let's check out the dialogue.
You're having your birthday party at a steakhouse?
Who's going to foot the bill?
You are.
What?
Come on.
You're rich.
Please.
Yeah, that almost happened to me.
Actually, for my birthday, I did have steak at my mom and dad's house.
And mom and dad, obviously, they went to the store and bought the steak.
But today was Christmas, and we did go out for brunch.
And my mom foot the bill.
No, not my dad.
No, my dad did not foot the bill.
My mom foot the bill.
I don't know where she gets her money.
Maybe she won the lottery or something.
Anyway, she foot the bill.
So, mom, thank you so much.
What did I have for this free Christmas meal?
Well, I had cow's tongue.
Does that sound good?
It's really good for me.
I like it.
Cow's tongue.
I had rib.
No, prime rib.
Oh, that's a type of steak.
So delicious.
I had lots of delicious food.
Some salmon. poached eggs, lots of fruit.
Oh, I like my fruit.
I had a salad, orange juice.
I even had a glass of champagne.
And it was all free, thanks to my very generous mother who foot the bill.
So, I already know.
Next year, when Christmas comes around, I'm going to foot the bill.
I hope.
I hope I'm able to foot the bill.
So once again, leave me a message.
Tell me when you go out, who foots the bill?
Does the company foot the bill for your coffee?
I wish, yeah.
Who foots the bill for special dinners?
That's it, you guys.
Listen to the dialogue a couple more times.
Practice with your friends.
Leave me a message.
