Easy English expression rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
December 28th, it's a great day.
I forgot something very important on Christmas.
Oh, this is Coach Shane, everybody.
Thank you for listening to my podcast.
So in America on Christmas, we have the Christmas tree, right?
And below the Christmas tree, we put presents.
But there is also something called a Christmas stocking.
It's like a big sock.
And inside the stocking, you put little gifts.
Like for my boys, it was cars and some fruit and nuts and things like that.
And I prepared stockings for my boys, but I forgot to give them to them until today.
So they had an extended Christmas.
And today's expression is all about that, in a way.
Enjoy EQ number 312.
Let's go back in time.
It's December 26, 2014.
You might be listening to this podcast in, I don't know, 2024.
If you are...
How awesome is that?
That's so cool.
Anyway.
Yeah, it's the day after Christmas and I hope if you celebrated Christmas, I hope it was a good time.
Santa did visit me, and I'm wearing some track bottoms, some running pants, jogging suit type thing.
Yeah, very comfortable stuff that Santa brought me, and I like it.
What did Santa bring you?
I want to know.
Tell me what Santa brought you.
Did he perhaps bring you a stocking stuffer?
Yeah, that's today's expression.
A stocking stuffer.
Think about America and you know, in the movies or maybe on television, the old style American Christmas.
You got a family and they have a Christmas tree, right?
And maybe they have a fireplace, okay, where they have a, you know, a fire burning.
And if you look carefully at Christmas at the fireplace, you might see something.
Some stockings.
They look like socks.
Some really big socks.
And sometimes those socks have a name on it, like Billy and Janie.
You know, just the kids' names.
Mom and Dad, maybe.
Well, that's called a Christmas stocking.
Now, in that stocking, Santa lives.
We'll put gifts, little presents.
Can he put big presents like, I don't know, a Sony PlayStation?
Of course not.
It's too big.
So what does Santa put in those stockings?
Well, he might put some fruit. an orange or an apple, maybe some nuts like a walnut or some peanuts.
He might put some candies like a chocolate bar or a chocolate Santa or something like that.
He could put a gift for a boy like maybe a pocket knife or a small rubber super ball that'll bounce forever for millions and millions and millions of bounces.
He might put a small stuffed ball doll or a stuffed animal, maybe a new pair of gloves, just anything.
Anything little Santa might put into the Christmas stocking.
Now, what's another verb for put?
To put your foot into your sock, to put a gift into a stocking.
Another word for put is to stuff.
Stuff your foot into this sock.
So actually this happened to me yesterday.
My sister, she had some socks.
I didn't know they were hers.
So I put her socks on because my feet were cold.
And I completely stretched out the socks.
Her socks were too small.
And she got really mad.
She said...
Why did you stuff your foot in my sock?
And I was sorry.
Yeah, to stuff into, to put your foot into something, but it took a lot of energy.
Stocking stuffers, those are the gifts that you stuff into the stocking.
Just tons and tons and millions and millions of gifts into this one stocking.
Those are the best Christmas stockings.
Do you have Christmas stockings in your country?
Well, if you come to America and if I adopt you as a family member, I'll be sure to give you a Christmas stocking.
Let's go ahead and check out the dialogue.
Did you get any presents?
Yes, I got a digital camera and some trainers.
Oh, some lip balm as a stocking stuffer.
You still have a Christmas stocking?
Sure, why not?
Wow, that's a great Christmas.
A digital camera, some trainers, some running shoes, lip balm.
Lip balm, that's the stuff you put on your lips when they're too dry in the wintertime.
Many people need lip balm.
Unfortunately, did Coach Shane have a Christmas stocking?
No, no, I did not have a Christmas stocking.
I was very sad.
I told my mother, next year, I expect a Christmas stocking.
She laughed and she said, how old are you?
And I told my mother, age doesn't matter.
You are still my mom.
I am still your son.
And I want a Christmas stocking next year.
So I think she'll give me one.
I hope so.
Yeah, they are for children.
But I'm sorry.
I'm a kid at heart.
I love Christmas.
I love giving gifts and of course receiving gifts.
I love the shopping and the wrapping and I just love the food and everything about it.
Christmas is very fun for me.
So Christmas stockings.
When I'm 85 years old, I'll still want a Christmas stocking.
And, of course, the better the stocking stuffer, the better.
Get me a new cell phone, digital camera.
Yeah, anything.
Anything you can put into a stocking, I'll take.
That's today's expression.
The holiday for me is winding down, but we've got New Year's coming up very quickly.
So I'll talk about New Year's and my plans maybe tomorrow.
Check out the dialogue two more times.
Did you get any presents?
Yes, I got a digital camera and some trainers.
Oh, some lip balm as a stocking stuffer.
Huh?
You still have a Christmas stocking?
Sure, why not?
Did you get any presents?
Yes, I got a digital camera and some trainers.
Oh, some lip balm as a stocking stuffer.
You still have a Christmas stocking?
Sure, why not?
Thanks so much for listening.
