Easy English expression.
Rehashed. Hello, everybody.
My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on. Let's Master English.
Coach Shane here. Happy Thursday.
I hope you're doing great.
We've had rain. It's December and it's been raining.
The snow is disappearing and my two boys are not happy.
I hope we have a white Christmas.
Do you like to have a white Christmas?
Maybe you've never had one.
Yeah. Well, that's that's what we're hoping for.
But the rain is stealing Christmas's thunder.
Check out today's podcast.
Let's go back in time.
Today's podcast is to steal my thunder.
Steel S -T -E -A -L. Hmm, not good.
My Thunder. Thunder T -H -U -N -D -E -R.
Now sometimes when it rains outside, there's that loud noise from the sky.
That is Thunder. So to steal my thunder, what does that mean?
This expression actually means to steal my applause.
Do you understand applause?
A -P -P -L -A -U -S -E. If you give a speech after the speech, if people are happy, they, we call that the thunder of applause.
So to steal somebody's thunder means to steal their glory or to steal their fame.
So the idea is you worked really hard to create something.
Maybe it was a business proposal.
Maybe it was an art project.
Maybe it was some writing assignment.
And you worked the hardest.
Because of you, it's excellent.
But then somebody else, maybe your boss, or maybe somebody you were working with, that person says, I did it.
Me and my team did it.
That is so unfair. That person is stealing your glory.
That person is stealing your thunder.
To steal somebody's thunder is no good.
Let's check out a dialogue.
Aren't you inviting Amanda to the wedding?
No way. She always tries to steal my thunder.
How? Because she always tries to be the queen?
That's right. That's my day.
And I'm not going to let anyone steal my thunder.
Yes, I've heard about that.
Sometimes women are jealous of other women.
And they intentionally do not invite certain women to their wedding.
Because they know that that woman will try to be the star.
She will try to be very attractive.
She'll try to talk to everybody.
She'll try to give a long speech.
That means that she is trying to steal the bride's thunder.
Yeah, I understand.
Stealing somebody's thunder is no good.
So if you do something very important, make sure your name is on it.
Make sure everybody knows how much work you put into that project.
Don't let anyone steal your thunder.
