Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Goat Shane here.
E-cubed rehash number 259.
Oh, I love today's expression.
You meet somebody, somebody new.
And how does your relationship go?
Well, here's a phrasal verb that you can use to inquire about that.
Enjoy it.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is very good.
It is going through a rough patch.
I am going through a rough patch.
For a couple of years I went through a rough patch.
Are you going through a rough patch?
What this expression simply means is a difficult time, a bad time.
So if you are going through something, you are experiencing something.
I'm going through a divorce.
Right now I'm experiencing a divorce.
No, not me.
That's just an example.
I'm going through cancer treatment.
Right now I'm getting treatment for cancer.
So when you go through something, you are experiencing something, and usually it's not easy.
It's quite difficult.
Going through a rough...
Patch, R-O-U-G-H, means not smooth.
Patch, P-A-T-C-H, that means a small area.
You are going through a very difficult time, but it's just a short time.
But anyway, it's very difficult.
Maybe it's a couple of days.
Maybe it's a couple of weeks.
It might be a couple of months.
Well, in my case, I'm 47.
So I'm kind of old.
And I'll be honest, for about six years, I went through a rough patch.
Now, six years sounds like a long time.
And yeah, if you're a young person...
Six years is not a short time.
It's not just a patch.
It's like a lot of time.
But, well, the older we get, the patches, they can be bigger.
Oh, boy.
I hope that you are not going through a rough patch.
If you are...
Be strong.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Hey Shane, I haven't seen you in a while.
Oh, I'm going through a rough patch.
At work?
No, no, at home.
Lots of problems.
Yep.
Sometimes we have a rough patch.
Sometimes it's just at work.
Sometimes it's just at home.
Sometimes it's just with your friend or your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife.
Sometimes it's everywhere.
Those rough patches.
They can be really tough.
Really tiring.
Once again, for me, I'm not joking.
I am not joking.
Six years.
Six years.
And it's like...
During that time, I'm always thinking, well, it won't get worse than this.
And it does.
It did.
Yeah.
But you just keep going.
You keep going and you know that...
Eventually, it will stop.
Who knows when?
Who knows when?
So for me, is my rough patch over?
I hope so.
The last year has been very nice.
It hasn't been great, but it's been a big change for me.
And we'll see.
I hope... that my rough patch is over.
And if you are going through a rough patch, well, just know that I'm with you.
I'm not going to tell you anything.
I'm not going to give you any advice.
But I'm there.
I'm with you.
So you're not alone.
All right, let's check out that dialogue two more times.
Hey Shane, I haven't seen you in a while.
Oh, I'm going through a rough patch.
At work?
No, no, at home.
Lots of problems.
Hey Shane, I haven't seen you in a while.

At work?
No, no, at home.
Lots of problems.
Thanks so much for listening.
