Today's expression is right off the bat.
Oh, this is a great expression.
Very American.
Right off the bat.
R-I-G-H-T meaning immediately.
O-F-F off the bat.
B-A-T as in baseball.
A baseball bat. not the Dracula flying bat.
Actually, I don't think they make a noise.
Anyway, right off the bat, what does this expression mean?
It means immediately right away, right away, right off the bat immediately.
Now, how do we use this expression?
Situations where we want to say that something happened boom, right away.
We can say right off the bat so a good example would be an English company that specializes in writing.
Okay, there's a new company out there and the You know, I understand new companies.
When they start they want to find as many customers as possible, right?
So this company never sent me an email to say hi.
They immediately started advertising on our Facebook page.
They never said hi.
They never asked me.
They just started leaving messages and then trying to get people to go back to their Facebook page so that they could sell them their product, their services.
Right off the bat.
They didn't even say hi.
Just right away, immediately, right off the bat.
So what did I do?
I deleted it.
You know what?
To be honest, I have no problem promoting another teacher.
If the teacher is good, if he or she has a good service, great.
Let me tell my students.
Let me tell people about it.
But let's build a relationship first.
Let me learn about you.
Let me hear about you.
Let me hear about your theories and what it is that you try to do.
And Then, after I know you, then I might introduce you to my family.
But not right away.
Not right off the bat.
It's a great expression.
Check out the dialogue.

The teacher gave us a test right off the bat.
Yeah, I remember back in school.
Back in college sometimes you, you go to class, you know you're tired and the teacher, the teacher doesn't teach, just boom, right away, right off the bat, they give you a test.
Oh my god, at least let me get prepared.
So why does this expression mean immediately?
Well, we're not sure, but it probably comes from baseball.
So you have to understand a little bit of baseball.
Basically, there is a guy on first base.
He's a runner.
He's hoping to go to second base and then to third base and then to home to score a run.
But right now he's on first base and there's a batter.
There's a guy up to bat and the pitcher throws the ball and the batter hits the ball.
Now, Usually, the runner on first base will wait.
He will watch the ball to make sure it's safe to run.
If it's not safe to run, he might just stay on first base.
But sometimes, well, and the strategy is if there is two outs, The runner is going to run.
And first base might not be a good example.
Second base might be a better example.
But anyway, as soon as the batter hits the ball, boom, the runner starts running right off the bat.
As soon as the ball flies off the bat, immediately off the bat, the runner starts running.
That's the idea.
If you don't understand baseball, then you probably don't understand what I said.
Don't worry about it.
It means nothing immediately, without waiting, without an introduction, without saying hi, without checking, without making sure, boom right off the bat.
It's a good expression.
