Easy English expression rehashed. Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English. TGIF. Thank God it's Friday.
How you doing, everybody? I've got two...
It's one expression today, but it has two different meanings.
I love these. Today we're going to study a phrasal verb.
And if you really want to be good at English, American English, well, British English, whatever.
If you really want to be good at daily English, you need to understand phrasal verbs.
So I hope that you enjoy this podcast. in time.
Today, great phrasal verb to put someone on.
To put somebody on. I'm going to give you two definitions for this phrasal verb.
The first definition to put somebody on is to hire somebody.
To put somebody on. I would love to put somebody on here at Let's Master English.
I would love to be able to hire somebody to take care of the editing, audio editing and video editing.
Oh, I need somebody. I need somebody for that job.
Money is the problem. I do not have enough money to pay anybody for... that work.
To put somebody on, one possible meaning, to hire.
Another possible meaning is to tease somebody.
So for example, you say, Shane, I want to give you $10,000.
And I can't believe it. What? Really? Are you putting me on?
Are you teasing me? And of course, then you say, yes, I am.
That was funny. And then I cry. So, to put somebody on... can have two very different meanings.
And we have a great conversation with both definitions of the expression in it.
Are you ready? Here we go. I might put somebody on at the office.
What about my brother John? Are you putting me on?
What? He's smart. Hmm. Maybe, but he's gotten fired from every job he's ever had.
Be careful when you recommend somebody. It's so dangerous recommending a friend or a family member.
If the person does a bad job, it hurts you.
Yeah, it's dangerous, but at the same time we want to help our family.
So this guy says, I might hire somebody at the office.
I might put somebody on at the office. His friend says, what about my brother John?
John's available. And the guy says, are you putting me on?
Are you teasing me? Are you joking with me?
Are you serious? What? What are you talking about?
And the guy says, what? He's smart. John's smart.
Maybe. Maybe John is smart. But. At every job that John has had, he has gotten fired.
So probably if I put him on at my office...
Later on, I would have to fire him. Yeah, tough situation.
Tough situation. What about you? Has anyone put you on today?
Has anybody teased you today? Told you something that you just can't believe?
Are you the boss? Are you looking to put somebody on at your company maybe?
What about if you're an employee? Are you looking for somebody that wants to put somebody on the payroll?
Well, if you don't have a job, I definitely hope you get one soon.
A job that you like. And if somebody's teasing you today, if they're putting you on...
Just relax and maybe you'll have a chance to put that person on too.
Check out the dialogue two more times. I might put somebody on at the office.
