Let's master English.
Oh, I love today's phrasal verb.
I hope things pan out for you well today.
Check it out.
Let's go back in time.
Today we have a phrasal verb.
Oh, this is a good one.
It is to pan out, uh-huh.
So a phrasal verb is an action verb plus a preposition.
So today's verb is pan to pan.
What does it mean to pan?
Well, to pan actually comes from looking for gold.
A long time ago in America, they would take these pans like a frying pan and they would dip the frying pan into a river and pick up the sand.
And then they would shake out the sand looking for gold.
They were panning for gold.
They were looking for money.
They were looking for success.
So if you panned some sand from the river and you found gold, you were successful.
And that's where to pan out comes from.
How did your situation pan out?
Were you successful?
Did you find gold?
That's the idea.
Now, many times this expression is used in a negative situation.
What I mean is, it didn't pan out.
How did it pan out?
Well, it didn't pan out.
Were you successful?
No, I wasn't successful.
This is usually how you'll hear the expression.
Let's check out a dialogue.
No, it didn't pan out.
The guy was asking too much.
Perfect example.
Did you get that car you were talking about?
So this guy wanted to buy a car.
It sounds like he might have wanted a used car.
Did it pan out?
No, it didn't pan out.
I wasn't successful.
I wasn't able to buy the car.
Why not?
The guy was asking too much, and we studied that yesterday, the asking price.
So what about you?
How is your English today?
Are you successfully learning English?
Are you successfully studying and improving in your English ability?
Is there something else you're doing?
Maybe you're applying for a job or trying to get into a better school?
Maybe you have a project at your company, a sales call that you're going to, a marketing event.
How is it panning out?
I hope it pans out well for you.
Yeah, I do.
I wish the best for all of you.
Let's get those pans and find some gold.
Let's be successful.
That's today's expression, to pan out.
It didn't pan out well yesterday.
I wasn't successful.
It didn't happen the way I wanted it to.
How did it pan out?
How did it turn out?
Were you successful?
Did you achieve your goal?
It's a great phrasal verb.
Learn it and use it.
Let's listen to the dialogue two more times and together let's master English.
Did you get that car you were talking about?
No, it didn't pan out.
What happened?
The guy was asking too much.
Did you get that car you were talking about?
No, it didn't pan out.
What happened?
The guy was asking too much.
Thanks so much for listening.
