Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello, everybody.
My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hey, everybody.
Coach Shane here.
How you doing?
It's time for EQ number 240.
I hope you're enjoying these podcasts.
If you do, please share them with your friends.
That means so much to me.
All right, here we go.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression, oh, I like it.
To make ends meet.
To make M-A-K-E-N's E-N-D-S meet M-E-E-T.
So an end.
Imagine this.
You have a string, a piece of string, like a shoestring.
And you have, if you stretch out the shoestring.
You have two ends, right?
Yeah, you've got one on the left and one on the right, two ends.
Or let's say you have a meter stick, a stick that is one meter long.
You have two ends.
One end says zero millimeters.
The other end says one.
What, a hundred millimeters?
No, that's 10.
A thousand millimeters or a hundred centimeters or one meter.
That's the other end, right?
So to make ends meet means to take those two ends and bring them together.
So they meet, so they touch, so they can say hi.
To make ends meet, we're not talking about a shoestring.
We're not talking about a meter stick.
We're talking about your money.
So think about your money.
Every month you have money that comes in and you have money that goes out.
Do you understand?
Your income and your expenses.
So hopefully your income is the same as your expenses.
If you're lucky, your income is more than your expenses.
Then you can save money.
Do you understand?
So if your income is the same as your expenses, you are making ends meet.
The outgoing money is the same as the ingoing money.
They're the same.
They come together as the same, minus and positive as the same.
You're making ends meet.
You are surviving.
You're doing okay.
You're not doing great, but you're doing okay.
That's how I'm doing.
I'll be honest.
About 10 years ago, I was doing really good.
But then I had some difficulties and I wasn't able to make ends meet.
I was spending more money than I was making.
It was a very difficult time.
Very difficult.
But finally, in 2014...
Well, actually, in 2014, I wasn't exactly making ends meet.
I was still a little bit minus.
But I'm sure in 2015, finally, I will be able to make ends meet.
If I'm lucky, I'll be able to save a little bit of money.
I hope so.
How are you doing?
Are you making ends meet?
Check out the dialogue.
Are you collecting cans?
Bottles too.
What for?
Trying to make ends meet.
Oh, you bet.
You bet.
When you're trying to make ends meet, when you're trying to survive, when you are doing the best to survive, you're not asking for free money.
You're not asking the government for money.
You're trying to do it yourself.
You will do anything.
You will work any job.
You will do your best to make ends meet.
Boy, and I respect that.
My favorite success stories are the stories of people who came, who started with nothing And then built something.
And those people who build something, they don't only benefit themselves.
They benefit the people around them by giving jobs.
They benefit the community by having purchasing power.
I really respect those people.
When it comes to business, when it comes to finance, when it comes to survival in the economy...
I love the person who struggled in the beginning, who had a hard time in the beginning, making ends meet.
Because those people really do know what it takes, what it requires to survive.
And it's not just about money.
I mean, you know, I like that philosophy for language learning, too.
And that might be you.
You may have studied like everybody else, but you really don't know.
You really don't have the confidence.
You're at zero.
But keep studying and eventually you'll build that level and become a great English speaker listener understander writer, etc.
But anyway, back to today's expression, to make ends meet.
Your outgoing money equals your incoming money.
You are surviving.
That's a good thing.
And once again, I hope that all of you are doing better, not just making ends meet.
I hope you're making good money and saving that money.
Let's check out the dialogue two more times.
Are you collecting cans?
Bottles too.
What for?
Trying to make ends meet.
Are you collecting cans?
Bottles too.
What for?
Trying to make ends meet.
