All right. Off to today's expression.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression.
It's a comparison. Hero versus Heroine.
Uh oh. Hero. H -e -r -o Heroine.
H -e -r -o -i -n -e. A hero is a guy, like Superman or Batman.
A heroine is a woman, like Catwoman or Wonder Woman.
Those are The heroes and heroines when I was a little kid.
Nowadays, I don't know who who they are.
Bruce Willis is a hero.
By the way, some of you may know of the drug called heroin.
Yes, the drug heroin, H -E -R -O -I -N.
And the female hero heroin, H -E -R -O -I -N -E.
sound exactly the same.
So this is a very terrible sentence, the heroine loves heroine.
That's not funny, yeah.
Alright let's check out a dialogue.
Who's your favorite hero?
Hmm... Joan of Arc.
She's a heroine, not a hero.
Same thing, she was braver than most men.
Yes, and this is my point, everybody.
If you have been listening this long you will learn something very important.
Hero, heroine, yes, there are two different words, but many people, when they see a hero, they don't care if it's a guy or a girl.
So even if it's a girl, we can say hero.
And the same thing with actor and actress.
Yes, actor is a man, actress is a woman, but if somebody asks you who's your favorite actor, you can give a woman's name.
It's very common in America to describe a woman as an actor.
Now, once again, we do have actress, we do have heroine specifically to describe women but actor and hero are also used to describe women.
You got that? All right that's an important point and that's the point of today's lesson.
So listen to the dialogue two more times and tell me, think about it, who is your favorite hero?
And I don't care if it's a man or a woman but you me a message.
Check it out. For me, Joan of Arc.
Who's your favorite hero?
Hmmm, Joan of Arc. She's a heroine, not a hero.
Same thing. She was braver than most men.
