Easy English Expression, rehashed!
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hi, everyone.
Coach Shane here.
How's it going?
Ever hear someone say haul ass?
Yeah.
It sounds kind of crazy, right?
Let's break it down and see what it really means.
This is E-Cube number 390.
Enjoy.
Let's go back in time.
Today's expression, oh, it's very useful.
This is an expression you use with your friends, not really with your mom, not with your boss.
It's possible with your boss.
The expression is to haul ass.
To haul, H-A-U-L.
That means to carry.
Usually we think of with a truck.
So to move something from A to B you need to haul A to B.
So if you make computers You have to ship the computers to the airport.
You have to haul the computers to the airport.
That's the idea.
Here, what are we hauling?
We're not hauling computers.
We are hauling ass.
A-S-S, which refers to your butt.
B-U-T-T.
If you're sitting down, you are sitting on your butt.
If you sit all day long, your butt is probably very big.
Anyway, to haul ass...
That means to carry your butt.
Actually, this great expression means to go quickly to some place.
So if you are late, you should haul ass.
Yeah, if you need to hurry, you had better haul ass.
That's what it means.
It means to go someplace quickly.
It's a great expression.
Check out the dialogue.
Um, isn't your meeting at three?
Oh no, I'm gonna be late.
You'd better haul ass.
Yep, see ya.
Yeah, you have a meeting at three o'clock.
Right now it's 2.57.
Oh boy.
You better haul ass.
Yep, you better haul ass.
Tomorrow I have a doctor's appointment.
I think at 10 o'clock.
No, no, no, no, no.
At 12 o'clock.
Yeah, lunchtime, 12 o'clock.
So if I'm looking at my watch at 11.50 and I'm saying, hmm, I need to do something right now.
What do I need to –
I have a doctor's appointment at 12 o'clock.
Oh my God, 10 minutes.
I'm going to be late.
I need to haul ass.
I need to hurry up.
I better get going.
It's a great expression.
If you need to hurry up, then you need to haul ass.
That's today's expression.
Practice two more times.
And together, let's master English.
