Today's expression is so useful.
It is to get cold feet.
You know your feet, you walk on your feet.
Cold feet, that doesn't feel good.
To get cold feet.
What does this mean?
Well, actually this expression means to get nervous, to get scared.
That's the idea.
So if you are nervous or if you are scared, do you do something?
No, usually you don't.
Usually you don't do anything.
So if there is some sort of opportunity and all you have to do is ask or make a phone call or go talk to the person Or send a letter,
And you think about it.
You want to send the letter.
You want to make the phone call.
You want to talk to the person.
But you get too scared.
You get too nervous.
And you don't do it.
That means you got cold feet.
Now why does this expression mean that?
Well, I have my own idea.
And I'll tell you that.
After you listen to the dialogue.
Here we go.
Oh, how was your date last night?
Oh, I didn't go.
She canceled?
Actually, I didn't even call.
You got cold feet.
Yes, it happens.
Lots of guys, you know, they're interested in a girl.
And they need to call her, but they don't.
They get too scared.
Or sometimes they start calling 555-12... And they stop dialing.
They get cold feet.
Or they dial the number 555-1212.
Hello?
And they hang up the phone.
They can't say anything because they got cold feet.
Do you think Coach Shane ever had cold feet?
Never.
I am pure confidence.
No, that's not true.
I always get cold feet.
I do.
I get nervous in front of a lot of people.
If there's a joke or something I want to say or maybe, oh, this is a good situation.
When I lived in Korea, of course, I had to speak Korean.
And sometimes I got really nervous speaking in front of other people, especially in Korean.
So in my head, okay, I'm going to say this joke.
I'm going to ask this question in front of all these people.
And I get my chance to ask the question or to say something funny.
And I don't say anything.
I just keep it.
I got cold feet.
Absolutely.
It happened to me.
Now, why does this expression mean you got scared?
Well, this is just my guess.
But when you watch, you know a Hollywood movie or a TV show, or maybe you yourself.
Let's say it's the summertime and you walk up to a swimming pool and you want to see something the water.
You want to test the water.
Is it hot or cold?
So what do you do?
Most people put their foot in the swimming pool.
They put their foot in there and then they say, oh, it's too cold.
It's too cold.
And then you don't go in there.
So if you get, if your foot gets cold, you decide that the water is too cold and you don't go swimming.
That's just my idea.
So Maybe that image will help you remember this expression.
And also what will help you remember this expression is telling me when you got cold feet.
When was the situation?
When you were going to do something but then, at the last minute, you didn't do it because you were scared?
You were nervous.
You didn't want to be embarrassed.
