Easy English Expression, rehashed.
Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Happy Wednesday.
It's hump day.
EQ number 218 coming at you.
I am Coach Shane.
Thank you so much for listening.
I greatly appreciate it.
We got a great word today.
Actually, it's a sad word.
It's a terrible word, but we need to know it.
Check it out.
Let's go back in time.
Today we have such a good word.
Have you ever been really sad, really disappointed?
I mean, really, really sad.
Like you really wanted something to happen.
But it didn't happen.
You really wanted to see somebody, but you were never able to see the person.
Oh, it's like you're just you're not sad.
You're like super, super, super, super sad.
Is there a word that we can use to describe that?
Absolutely.
And that word is devastated.
D-E-V-A-S-T-A-T-E-D.
One more time.
D-E-V-A-S-T-E-T-E-D.
Devastated.
It's like diva and stated, but it's devastated.
Devastated.
Now devastated can have a deeper meaning, but in regular daily English, if you want something to happen but it doesn't happen, you can say oh man, I was devastated.
I was so sad.
I was super, super, super, really, really, really, really sad.
Yeah, devastated.
It's like you want to listen to today's expression, but your mobile phone, your smartphone, the battery dies.
No, I want to listen to Coach Shane, but my battery's dead.
I'm so devastated.
Yeah.
Many times when people use the expression, I'm devastated.
It's actually not about something important.
The original word devastated is about horrible, terrible things.
But in daily English, people use it, for example, in our conversation.
Check it out.
Can you order these chocolates for me?
Oh, sorry, baby.
No international orders.
Are you okay?
I'm devastated.
They look so good.
Uh, don't worry, sugar.
I'll find some better chocolates.
Yeah.
I actually experienced that exact situation.
There were some chocolates that I discovered in another country.
And I know the taste.
They're so absolutely wonderfully delicious.
So I went to the company's website and I ordered.
And they said at the end of the order, sorry, no international orders.
And I cried.
I cried for three days.
For three days, I cried because I could not get the delicious tasting chocolate that I wanted.
I was devastated.
I was truly, truly devastated.
Oh, sure.
Now I can look at the situation and laugh and I realize it was silly.
It was not that important.
But...
At that time, in that moment, I truly was devastated.
Let's check out that dialogue two more times.
Can you order these chocolates for me?
Oh, sorry baby.
No international orders.
Are you okay?
I'm devastated.
They look so good.
Don't worry, sugar.
I'll find some better chocolates.
