All right, to today's expression. Let's go back in time.
Today, a great lesson. We're going to talk about the difference between classic... and classical.
Now, when we talk about classical, it refers usually to a very specific period of time.
Often when we say classical, we think of ancient Greece, ancient Rome. classical scholars might be Plato, Socrates, Aristotle.
Classical music was probably composed in the 1500s, 1600s, 1700s and into the 1800s.
Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. That is a good example of collaboration. classical music. on the other hand, describes something that is terrifying.
Something that is representative. If we're talking about cars, American cars, a classic...
American car would be the Ford Mustang. That's a classic car.
A classic European car would be perhaps this.
The BMW or the Mercedes-Benz. A classic Italian car would be the Ferrari.
So it doesn't just mean a specific area or even a specific time.
Classic describes something that is typical.
Something that everybody understands and can relate to.
Another area would be literature. Classical literature. probably refers to ancient literature.
Classic literature can depend on the situation.
A classic piece of American literature might be something by Mark Twain.
Mark Twain wrote many classics in America, including Tom Sawyer.
But even in modern literature, if we talk about Stephen King, a classic Stephen King novel would be The Shining.
So once again, when we say classic, Time, the time period is not so important.
Classical, on the other hand, usually refers to a specific period of time A long time ago.
Let's check out the dialogue and it'll be easy.
I love classical music, man. Me too. Mozart's... is divine.
Yes. No, I mean Rush, Queen, ACDC. Oh, you mean classic music then.
Classic rock, to be more specific. yes there's a huge difference between classical music and classic music.
Classic music doesn't really make sense.
Classic rock. That makes sense. Classic rap.
If you like rap music, classic rap. I don't know.
I guess that would be 1980s rap, perhaps.
Maybe 1990s to – I don't know. I'm not – I don't –
No much about rap music. But classic rock, definitely.
Queen, Rush, ACDC, Def Leppard. Good music.
Classic music from jazz. Oh, yes. The jazz classics.
There are so many, but once again... I don't really know any particular jazz songs.
Let me see. One jazz classic would be Autumn Leaves.
That's a classic jazz tune. And jazz, actually, they say a jazz standard.
But it's the same idea as a classic jazz tune.
Oh, there's that other one. If I ain't got that swing da-da-da-da-da-da I forget the name of that song, but that's another classic or another jazz standard.
What about you? What is your favorite type of music?
Do you like rock? What's your favorite classic rock song or maybe rock band?
Can you give me an example of what you like?
I hope this has helped clear up the difference between classic and classical.
When you think of music, it's easy to remember classical music, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms. problems is that right and when we talk about rock we say classic rock not Classical rock.
