Coach Shane here. I hope your Sunday is nice and relaxing and maybe you're spending it with your family, friends, just at home, relaxing.
I hope so. We have a great English expression.
I brought it to you because I know you are tough, even though Sunday, you like to learn a little bit of English.
So we got a great expression, eCube number 168, as far as I can tell.
Enjoy it. Don't forget, Let's Master English podcast coming tomorrow.
yes let's go back in time today's expression oh it's a great one as far as I can tell as far as I can tell as far as I can c -a -n tell t -e -l -l what does this mean well I'm going to to give you many definitions.
They're all the same thing.
Listen carefully. As far as I can tell, as far as I am aware, as far as I know, as far as I can see, as far as I understand, understand, as far as I've heard, as far as I've observed.
Yes, it's a big list. It's a very big list. But this is such a useful expression.
As far as I can tell, that simply means to my knowledge Knowledge.
From what I know. It's a great expression and we use it a lot.
And I have a very useful dialogue that will show you how you can use it.
Ready? Let's listen.
How many languages does Shane speak?
He said eleven. But as far as I can tell, it's only seven.
As far as I know, he speaks about twenty.
He's just an actor.
He only speaks one English.
Yeah, that's true. I speak English.
I do speak Korean. I have no problems communicating in Korean as long as the conversation is not serious.
Yeah, I know how to say thank you and probably well over 10 languages, but that's that's not speaking the language.
So, yeah, I guess I speak just one language really, really well, two languages, including Korean, and then nothing after that.
And I know many of you speak like 10 languages.
You guys are a bunch of geniuses.
It's true. As far as I know, the average student in Europe speaks three languages.
Is that true? That's amazing.
amazing as far as i know in asia the average student speaks three languages too it seems to be that they study their language and of course english and then another language typically another asian language but i don't know maybe you studied french or german americans yeah we study english and then we study a little bit of spanish or german or french maybe japanese in high school and that's it for most Americans.
My mom, she studied Spanish.
My sister studied Spanish.
When I went to high school, I did not study any language.
Didn't have to. I'm old.
Now they do though.
How many languages do you speak?
Let me know. I'm very curious.
But let's go back to today's expression.
As far as I can tell.
In this case, T -E -L -L does not mean say, it actually means decipher or understand.
As far as I can see.
As far as I can tell.
As far as I know. As far as as I am aware, as far as I understand, from what I know to my knowledge.
This is an excellent expression to use, especially when somebody wants to know something from you, but you are not not exactly sure of the answer.
If you use as far as I know, as far as I can tell, then you are safe if you are wrong.
Because if they say, for example, how old is Shane?
Shane. Shane is 38 years old.
You're wrong. But if you said, as far as I know, Shane is 38 years old.
Well, actually, I'm 46.
You're wrong. But because you said, as far as I know, as far as I can tell, you're safe.
People will not hold you responsible.
So this is a very good expression.
Let's check Check out that dialog two more times.
