Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is to cut in line.
To cut in line.
So what does this mean?
In line, that means you are standing waiting for something.
So for example, you are waiting for the bus.
Well, if there is just you, you just stand and wait for the bus.
But if there are two people, who should get on the bus first?
Of course, the first person who was there.
Well, you know if it's an old, if you were the first person there.
And there's an old grandmother.
Yes, we can let the grandmother on the bus first.
But let's say there are 10 people waiting.
If there are 10 people waiting, then we should form a line.
And the first person who arrived gets to get on the bus first.
The last person who arrived gets on the bus last.
That is in line, standing in line, waiting in line.
Now, in the UK, they usually say in a queue, Q-U-E-U-E.
But in America, in line, waiting.
And, as we discussed in DDM this week in New York City, especially in the northeast, northeastern part of America, they also say on line instead of in line.
But most Americans say in line.
So to cut in line is the same thing as to jump in line or to skip in line.
That means there is a line but you get in the middle of the line.
You go, you're supposed to go to the end, but you cut into the middle.
Do you ever do that?
That is not good.
Do not cut in line.
People who cut in line should be shot.
Let's check out the dialogue.
Uh, did you just cut in line?
Oh, there's a line here?
Yeah, the end of the line is way back there.
Oh, sorry.
Sorry.
Oh, come on.
You know those people.
There's a line there, but they act stupid.
Oh, I want to go to the movies.
Oh, I'll just stand here.
Uh, excuse me, there's a line here.
You have to go to the end of the line.
Oh, I didn't know.
Oh, get out of here.
You knew.
You liar.
Nobody likes you.
Get to the end of the line.
Let's be honest.
Have you ever cut in line?
Oh, many people do this.
There's a really long line, but they walk along the line and maybe they see somebody they know.
And they say, oh, John, how are you?
Yes, thank you for saving my space in line.
That's cheating.
Don't do that.
Don't cut in line.
Wait your turn.
You know, I'll tell you, though.
I went to the post office last week and there was like five or six people.
We were all waiting in line.
I live in a retirement community.
It's all old people.
Old people and me.
Seriously, I'm like the child of the community.
Anyway, there was this one lady who walked into the post office.
Didn't even look at the line and went straight to the front.
And all of us who were standing in line, we looked at each other and we just kind of laughed.
We're like, oh boy, whatever.
She was really old.
The lady was like 80 years old.
So we're like...
Yeah, go ahead.
You can go first.
We'll just wait.
Me, I'm the child.
I have to wait for everybody.
But yeah, it happens.
People cut in line.
If the woman is pregnant, if the lady or the man is really old, yeah.
What about somebody in a wheelchair?
Should we let somebody in a wheelchair cut in line?
Sorry, i say no, and you know i've got friends who are in a wheelchair.
They're comfortable they're, they're sitting down, they're having a good time.
Now i'm teasing, i'm gonna get into trouble.
Somebody's gonna say coach shane, how could you say anything like that?
Oh sorry, that's my computer making noise.
There we go.
Yeah uh, don't be mad, just don't cut in line, right?
It's a great expression.
Listen to the dialogue two more times.
Did you just cut in line?
Oh, there's a line here?
Yeah, the end of the line is way back there.
Oh, sorry.
Uh, did you just cut in line?
Oh, there's a line here?
Yeah, the end of the line is way back there.
Oh, sorry.
Thanks so much for listening.
